Cast member previews just started for The Magic of Disney Animation. The attraction opens in nine days.
Some context.
Look, Disney runs the same sequence before every attraction opening, and anybody who follows the parks can recite it from memory.
Walls come down. Signage goes up. Landscaping materializes overnight. And then, somewhere in the final stretch, cast members start walking inside.
That last one is the tell. Cast previews are not a marketing beat; they are an operational requirement. Before an attraction can handle thousands of guests a day, the people running the thing have to actually run it first.
Which is why this week's news out of Disney's Hollywood Studios lands harder than it might sound.
What Is Happening
Cast members are now entering The Magic of Disney Animation ahead of the September 14 opening.
Construction walls are already down. Imagineering has been layering in finishing details around the courtyard for months.
What nobody knows: which cast members qualify, and how long the preview period runs. Disney has not said a word about either. That is normal. Those details almost always stay internal.
Why It Is a Real Signal
Cast previews exist for a genuinely practical reason.
Cast members have to learn the flow before guests show up. Walk the queue. Work the load points. Test the timing. Run the show. Find every problem that only reveals itself once actual humans start moving through the space.
And here, that job is considerably harder than a standard ride.
This is not one attraction. It is four experiences under a single roof, each with completely different demands:
- Olaf Draws, a timed class built around a brand-new Audio-Animatronic
- Off the Page, character meets spread across six themed departments
- Drawn to Wonderland, a play area, with supervision and crowd control instead of a queue
- The Once Upon A Studio Theater, running on a fixed show length and seating cycle
Moving guests between all four without creating a bottleneck is exactly the kind of thing previews are built to expose.
Now, the Soft Opening Question
The one every local is already asking.
Disney has not announced a public soft opening before September 14.
Cast previews often come before soft openings. Not always. And Disney never commits ahead of time. Soft openings are typically unannounced, arrive with zero warning, and can vanish just as fast.
Here is what is fair to say. Cast previews usually mean an attraction is close to ready. Whether Disney actually opens the doors early is a separate decision, and one that the company makes based on how the previews go.
Going to be at Hollywood Studios in the next several days? Check the Walt Disney Studios Lot instead of assuming it is still sealed up.
How We Got Here
The Magic of Disney Animation is part of the bigger conversion of Animation Courtyard into the Walt Disney Studios Lot.
Animation Courtyard closed in September 2025. The reimagined courtyard reopened to guests in May 2026, while work continued inside the attraction.
That gap is unusual. Guests have had run of the courtyard for about three and a half months while the main attraction sat behind walls, which is exactly why statue additions and finishing touches out there kept trickling into the news all summer.
The Roy E. Disney Animation Building has been the holdup. September 14 finally opens it.
What Is Waiting Inside
Disney has already previewed several pieces:
Drawn to Wonderland, an indoor play area for the youngest guests, was pulled from Mary Blair's original concept art for Alice in Wonderland.
Off the Page, character greetings are organized across six animation studio departments, including Story, Layout, Hand-Drawn Animation, Computer Animation, Lighting, and Effects.
Olaf Draws, an animation class featuring a new Olaf Audio-Animatronic with original dialogue recorded by Josh Gad.
The Once Upon A Studio Theater, showing the Emmy-winning short that the whole attraction is built on, with enhanced effects that put guests inside the story.
The Next Nine Days
More of the same, honestly.
Expect continued finishing work in the courtyard, probably more character statues, and previews running until Disney is satisfied with what it is seeing.
The thing to actually watch for is a soft opening. If one materializes, expect it to be short, completely unannounced, and absolutely mobbed within twenty minutes of word hitting social media.
Either way, after roughly a year behind construction walls, the last major Hollywood Studios opening of 2026 is nine days out.
