Currently, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is in the midst of Phase Five, which represents the second chapter of the post-Avengers: Endgame storyline, known as the Multiverse Saga. Within The Walt Disney Company, Marvel Studios has been working to expand its narrative scope by introducing a variety of superhero teams beyond the core Avengers.

At San Diego Comic-Con 2022, Kevin Feige revealed the MCU’s plans to introduce specialized teams to tackle various threats, ranging from cosmic and supernatural to street-level challenges.

Leading Marvel’s street-level storytelling on Earth are Tom Holland’s Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock/Daredevil, now established as central figures in this branch of the MCU.

With Daredevil’s absence since the conclusion of Netflix’s Daredevil series in 2018, Marvel Studios now faces the challenge of reintroducing the character to a modern MCU audience. The original series, based on Frank Miller’s iconic comic creation, ended as Disney+ (Disney Plus) emerged, shifting Marvel’s focus to its new streaming platform

Marvel President Kevin Feige had previously assured fans that Daredevil, the “Man Without Fear,” would join the MCU in an 18-episode season of the rebooted series, Daredevil: Born Again. Initially, the series was intended to be a soft reboot, framed as “Season One, not Season Four” of the Netflix series.

However, it now seems the MCU is moving closer to fully embracing its Netflix predecessor as more of a “Season Four,” but that doesn’t mean Disney and Marvel Studios aren’t ready to take some big risks.

Disney Tries Game of Thrones in New York City?

Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum has shared intriguing new details about the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series, comparing it to the epic scale and political intrigue of Game of Thrones — but set within the streets of New York City.

“Imagine if New York City was as intricate and problematic and scary as the world of Game of Thrones,” Winderbaum said in a report by ABC13. “All these forces vying for control, and it can be really hopeful at times, and really violent at times, and dark—but also there’s light at the end of the tunnel if you could just fight for it.”

The series, set to debut on Disney+ (Disney Plus), aims to weave street-level drama with larger themes of power and control. Winderbaum’s analogy suggests that Daredevil: Born Again will be far more than a superhero show, blending crime, politics, and survival into a gritty narrative that reflects the power struggles of Game of Thrones—only within the scope of New York’s underworld.

Fans are already speculating how this new take will reshape the tone of Marvel’s street-level heroes, including returning fan-favorite characters like Daredevil and Kingpin. With Marvel promising a darker and more nuanced storyline, Daredevil: Born Again could become a cornerstone of the MCU’s evolving, mature storytelling.

Whether the show will live up to the comparison remains to be seen, but Winderbaum’s statement has certainly heightened anticipation for the series. Audiences can look forward to a compelling, multi-layered exploration of New York’s criminal landscape when Daredevil: Born Again premieres.
