Why People Are Nervous
Art of Animation is one of the last Disney World resorts that actually commits to a bit.
Disney has spent years quietly modernizing hotel rooms across the property. Neutral palettes, clean lines, a tasteful framed character silhouette where a mural once lived. It looks perfectly nice. It also looks like a Marriott that happens to have Mickey on the wall.
Art of Animation is the exact opposite of that instinct. Enormous sculpted set pieces. Courtyards that genuinely feel like walking into the movie. Suites where the theming does not politely stop at the door.
So this hits differently than a resort refurbishment with beige walls and a duvet.
The Confirmed Details
Mid-June 2027 through October 2028, working on one themed area at a time.
Guests may see or hear maintenance in the active area during daytime hours. The resort stays open the entire time.
Four sections:
- Finding Nemo family suites
- Cars family suites
- The Lion King family suites
- The Little Mermaid standard rooms

Disney's notice does not say which area gets hit first. It also does not break those 16 months into individual phase dates.
What They Are Actually Doing at Art of Animation
Disney calls it a hard goods refresh.
In plain English, that means every piece of furniture and every fixture gets replaced. Not paint. Not a duvet swap. The whole interior.
This is the first major hard goods overhaul since Art of Animation opened in 2012. Fourteen years of family traffic is a brutal run for hotel furniture, so nobody is arguing that the rooms do not need it.
Now here is the part worth chewing on.
Disney showed a piece of concept art to the media earlier this year. Disney has not released any concept art publicly.
That is a choice. Concept art is normally exactly how Disney gets ahead of a story like this and calms people down. Withholding it on a resort where theming is the entire product? That guarantees speculation runs wild until something finally drops.
Where This Came From
Disney executives first flagged the project in May 2026 during a media briefing on Walt Disney World's classic attraction reinvestment strategy, naming Art of Animation for a summer 2027 room-and-suite refresh.
The new notice locks that in with actual dates.
The phased approach also aligns with how Disney has handled other recent Value Resort projects, suggesting this is a repeatable playbook rather than a special case.
Got a Trip Booked at Art of Animation
Traveling between mid-June 2027 and October 2028? A few things.
The resort stays open. This is not a closure. But you might land in or next to an active work zone, and Disney straight up says guests may see or hear maintenance during daytime hours.
And with zero published phase dates, there is no way to know which wing is torn up during your week. If you have strong feelings about a specific themed area, hold off on booking far out until Disney says more.
