While the entire hospitality and tourism industry has experienced a challenging couple of years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, cruise lines face a number of unique challenges of their own due to the uncertainty surrounding travel during this time. Many deadlines and refund periods for vacations and travel in general were given additional grace periods earlier on in the pandemic, however for many companies within the tourism industry these grace periods and refund options have begun to expire. Noting that flexibility in travel is still important during this time, Disney Cruise Line is staying ahead of the curve by extending their cruise date flexibility offer.

Disney Cruise Line first launched the offer allowing Guests to have some extra flexibility in changing their cruise dates prior to departure back in June 2020 and the cruise industry was in the early phases of reopening. The offer’s original end date was set for the end of August 2020 however much like the pandemic itself, the offer has continued to be extended.

Currently, Guests booked on any sailing departing on or before May 31, 2022 will have the option to change their departure date up to 15 days before the start of the cruise. The 15-day period allows Guests to make informed decisions on whether or not they feel safe or are able to travel for the dates they originally picked without losing out on the money put towards the trip and the vacation itself.

Disney Cruise Line and many other larger lines like Carnival and Royal Caribbean were recently the subject of an independent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to learn what the spread of COVID-19 is like on ships due to their enclosed spaces. Following the study, the CDC released new information encouraging people to avoid cruising until the COVID-19 risk factor aboard the ships is lowered.

Many cruisers disagreed with the CDC’s conclusion, citing the fact that they feel safer aboard cruise ships with all of the health precautions in place than they do at their local grocery stores. All Guests traveling aboard the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder, Disney Dream, and Disney Fantasy, and likely the Disney Wish when she launches later this year, are required to provide negative COVID-19 test results and proof of vaccination to board. Once on the ship, Guests and Cast Members must also follow mask and distancing guidelines.
