Disney Drops a Bombshell: Magic Kingdom Reinstates Reservation Rules After Recent Parade Controversy

Walt Disney World has quietly enacted a significant—but temporary—adjustment to Annual Passholder entry policies at Magic Kingdom, just one day after its new nighttime spectacular made its dazzling debut.

Starting July 21, 2025, Annual Passholders hoping to visit Magic Kingdom must now secure a theme park reservation regardless of the time of entry, including after 2:00 p.m.—a departure from the more relaxed access rules typically in place for weekday afternoons. According to Disney, this change is a short-term measure triggered by overwhelming guest interest in Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away, the park’s newest nighttime parade.

Surge of Crowds After Parade Preview

While the parade’s official premiere was set for Sunday, July 20, the buzz began earlier. On the evening of Friday, July 18, Magic Kingdom quietly hosted a soft opening of Starlight, offering an early look at the illuminated spectacle. Word spread fast. By the next morning, the park was reportedly overwhelmed with crowds eager to catch the first official showings. Within hours, theme park reservations for Annual Passholders vanished for July 20—and quickly for the following two days as well.

The multi-night sellout appears to have caught Disney by surprise. By July 19, reports from inside the park indicated unusually heavy foot traffic, packed hub viewing areas, and extended lines—not for rides, but for parade viewing zones. The energy was electric, but the logistics weren’t ideal.

This flash of demand has now prompted Disney to temporarily override its typical Passholder access rules. Normally, Passholders can enter most Walt Disney World parks freely after 2:00 p.m., with the exception of Magic Kingdom on Saturdays and Sundays. But under the new policy, all guests using Annual Passes must hold a valid reservation to enter Magic Kingdom at any time of day, even on weekdays.

What’s Changing and Where

Here’s how the updated policy shakes out for Passholders:

  • Magic Kingdom: Theme park reservation now required all day, including after 2:00 p.m.

  • EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom: No reservation required after 2:00 p.m.

Disney has indicated that this adjustment is only for a limited window and that the original, more flexible policy will return soon. Once demand for Disney Starlight levels off, Passholders will once again be able to enter Magic Kingdom without a reservation after 2:00 p.m. on weekdays and on “Good-to-Go” days.

A Parade That’s Lighting a Fire

Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away isn’t just another nighttime entertainment offering. Inspired by the classic Main Street Electrical Parade, the show merges legacy and innovation, featuring dreamlike “landscapes of light,” illuminated floats, and appearances by characters from Encanto, Peter Pan, Moana, and beyond. The show is led by the Blue Fairy and runs twice nightly at 9:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

The crowd response on preview night made it clear: Disney has struck a nerve with this parade, and fans are willing to flood the park to see it.

For now, Annual Passholders hoping to catch the parade will need to plan ahead and secure reservations—because if this weekend is any indication, Magic Kingdom isn’t cooling down anytime soon.
