Disney Is Putting the Finishing Touches on Something Big at Hollywood Studios

Construction walls at Disney parks have their own language, and once you know how to read them, the pace of what is happening behind them tells you almost everything about where a project stands. Early phase construction looks the same from the outside, regardless of what is being built. It is quiet, the walls are blank, and the visible progress is minimal because most of the work is happening out of sight. What is happening right now at the former Animation Courtyard at Disney's Hollywood Studios looks nothing like early-phase construction. The details appearing on the exterior of the blocked off area are finishing details, the kind that get added when a project is in its final weeks rather than its first months, and the cumulative picture of what is visible right now is genuinely exciting for anyone who has been watching this transformation unfold.

The Billboard Taking Shape

Crews have been painting the retro Walt Disney Studios billboard onto the theater's exterior wall of which will be renamed the Studio Theater as part of the reimagined Walt Disney Studios Lot area. The design reads Walt Disney Studios, Mickey Mouse, and Silly Symphony Sound Cartoons, and is directly inspired of Disney's Hyperion Studio visual identity, where animation production took place from 1926 to 1940. The most recent update shows meaningful progress compared to just days ago. The letters for studios, Mickey Mouse, and sound cartoons are filled in, and the music staff has been painted onto the design. This is not rough blocking or preliminary work. These are finished details going onto a surface that is clearly visible to guests rather than construction crews.

The wall where the billboard is taking shape has its own history worth knowing. A Voyage of the Little Mermaid billboard once occupied that same space before being removed ahead of the current show. The retro Disney Studios design replacing it is historically grounded in a way earlier advertising was not, connecting the building's exterior to the broader studio campus identity the new area is built around.

The Disney Icon That Came Back Overnight

The billboard is the latest visible update, but it is not the most dramatic one. Earlier this month, Disney installed the Sorcerer's Hat above the entrance to The Magic of Disney Animation, ending an eleven-year absence that had been one of the most persistently discussed gaps in Hollywood Studios' visual identity. The original hat stood on Hollywood Boulevard from 2001 until it came down in early 2015, and the fan community spent the years following its removal relitigating whether the decision had been the right one. The new hat sits in a different location than the original, above The Magic of Disney Animation entrance rather than at the center of Hollywood Boulevard, and it serves the new area rather than presiding over the entire park. But its presence gives the Walt Disney Studios Lot an immediate, recognizable visual centerpiece it needed.

The facade surrounding the hat is designed to echo the actual Disney Animation headquarters building in Burbank, California, grounding the Hollywood Studios experience in the real studio campus that inspired the transformation.

What Is Actually Opening at Disney

Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! opens on May 26, which is the first confirmed opening date for any new experience in the reimagined area. The Magic of Disney Animation follows later this summer. During that experience, guests will meet characters, take a digital drawing lesson with Olaf, and spend time in an Alice in Wonderland-themed playground. The reimagined outdoor space will include more green areas and pavement featuring character autographs and handprints. The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure continues its regular performance schedule at the theater, now renamed the Studio Theater.

The pace of visible finishing details appearing on the exterior of the Walt Disney Studios Lot right now is the most reliable indicator of where this project stands. The billboard is being painted in stages. The Sorcerer's Hat is already up. The first opening date is May 26. Disney is putting the finishing touches on something that has been months in the making at Hollywood Studios, and based on everything visible right now, the wait is almost over.
