Disney Officially Changing Iconic ‘Frozen’ Character, New Look Revealed

Disney has revealed a fresh glimpse at the new-and-improved Olaf.

First introduced in Frozen (2013), Olaf – a walking, talking snowman created by Elsa's (Idina Menzel) icy powers – has become a bona fide pop culture phenomenon. Voiced by Josh Gad, he's beloved for his earnest optimism, self-aware humor, and scene-stealing one-liners.

Unsurprisingly, the character plays a huge role in Disney's expansions of the franchise. Olaf was one of the highlights of Frozen 2 (2019) and has led his own featurette in the form of Olaf's Frozen Adventure (2017).

At Disney's theme parks, you can find Olaf meeting guests at Disney's Hollywood Studios as well as guiding guests through Arendelle and beyond on Frozen Ever After at EPCOT and Hong Kong Disneyland, plus Anna and Elsa's Frozen Journey at Tokyo DisneySea.

Disney Parks Transform Olaf

Ahead of the opening of Disney's latest World of Frozen at Walt Disney Studios Park (which will be renamed Disney Adventure World upon the land's debut) in March, Disney is taking Olaf to the next level with an advanced new meet-and-greet.

For the first time, meeting Olaf won't involve hugging a human-sized snowman. Instead, guests will encounter a to-scale version of the icon as Walt Disney Imagineering prepares to debut a next-generation robotic character.

First announced in November, this robotic Olaf is said to be “one of the most expressive and true-to-life characters built” (via Disney Parks Blog).

Tim Sypko, president and managing director of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, has released a new look at the robotic snowman, who will also be found at Hong Kong Disneyland's World of Frozen.

“I love so many things about Arendelle, but especially when new friends visit,” the lifelike snowman tells Sypko in the video before later turning to the camera and promising, “See you soon!”

The free-roaming Olaf is set to debut at both Hong Kong Disneyland and Disney Adventure World on the same day: March 29, 2026.

Judging by the responses to the latest footage, guests are excited to meet the snowman in the flesh. (Or rather, the snow.)

“Ok Olaf is cute!!!” said one Instagram user.

“Awww… he is so cute and impressive,” wrote another.

One said, “I can't wait to finally meet Olaf!”

What Else Can Guests Expect From World of Frozen?

Beyond a new-and-improved Olaf, guests have a lot to look forward to at Disney's latest version of World of Frozen.

Not only will the land feature Frozen Ever After (complete with the same improved audio-animatronics added to EPCOT's version as of this week), but it will also host a meet-and-greet with Anna and Elsa. A Royal Encounter with Elsa and Anna will welcome guests into Arendelle Castle for “a royal encounter like no other.”

Meanwhile, Arendelle Bay will boast a brand-new show, A Celebration in Arendelle. Elsa, Anna, Olaf, and Kristoff will board boats for “a magical moment that brings their cherished traditions to life.”

Guests can also spot other characters from the franchise throughout the land, including Mossie, the baby troll, and Oaken of Wandering Oaken's Trading Post and Sauna.

In terms of food, guests can sample Nordic delicacies at Nordic Crowns Tavern before shopping for merch at Arendelle Boutique and Fjord View Shop.

Will Olaf Come to EPCOT?

Guests can currently meet Anna and Elsa in EPCOT's Norway Pavilion. However, as of yet, Disney has not confirmed whether Olaf will make his way to World Showcase.

Fans have suggested that he never will, for one simple reason: it will cause chaos.

Considering how densely packed the World Showcase pavilions tend to be on an average day, setting a free-roaming, miniature robotic loose into the crowd sounds like a recipe for disaster.

It's worth noting that free-roaming audio-animatronics don't have the best track record at Disney parks.

Lucky the Dinosaur, for example, previously made appearances at Disney California Adventure Park and Animal Kingdom's DinoLand U.S.A. (RIP) before relocating to Hong Kong Disneyland for its opening and later disappearing from public view. (Today, you can find him at Walt Disney Imagineering where he meets guests on the Backstage Magic Tour from Adventures By Disney.)

Disney has also teased similar free-roaming animatronics of Judy Hopps from the Zootopia franchise, but nothing has come to fruition – yet, at least.
