Disney Park Close Looking More Real

The confetti was ready. The stages were set. But just as Hong Kong Disneyland kicks off its biggest celebration in years, a powerful tropical storm is threatening to bring the entire party to a standstill.

Tropical Storm Wipha, expected to reach typhoon strength, is heading straight for southern China, and Hong Kong is directly in its path. Disney has already issued an operational warning: the park may not open at all on July 20.

This isn’t just a passing storm—it’s a direct hit to one of Disney’s most important international anniversaries.

Disney Issues Urgent Weather Alert

As of early July 20 local time, Hong Kong Disneyland’s official website now warns of “inclement weather” affecting operations. The message is clear: the park could experience a delayed opening, reduced experiences, or a complete shutdown depending on Wipha’s trajectory.

While tropics in the Atlantic are quiet, Tropical Storm #Wipha is passing by the southern coast of China, not too far from Hong Kong and Macau. Heavy rain and gusty winds are expected across the region, even though Wipha will weaken as it scrapes the coast. Flooding is likely. – @WeatherSphere22 on X

Additionally, Inspiration Lake Recreation Center has already been closed until further notice, signaling the severity of the incoming weather system.

Local reports suggest Wipha could intensify, making travel—and any outdoor experience—risky.

What Guests Need to Do Immediately

If you’re in Hong Kong or planning to visit the park today, take these steps right now:

  • Check the website before leaving your hotel – Conditions are changing rapidly.

  • Use the official app – It will offer real-time updates and alternative options if the park partially opens.

  • Have a backup plan – Indoor tourist attractions or dining spots may be your best bet if Disney shutters for the day.

  • Call Disney Guest Services – The park may offer rescheduling or ticket options in the event of closure.

Veteran Tips for Navigating Weather Closures

Park veterans say this isn’t the first storm to disrupt magic, and it likely won’t be the last. Here’s how to pivot like a pro:

  • Don’t rush to the gate – The park may open late, so monitor online updates before braving the elements.

  • Visit covered attractions – If open, look for indoor rides like Mystic Manor or Iron Man Experience.

  • Use downtime for exclusive merch shopping – If indoor stores open early, get your anniversary gear before it sells out post-storm.

Why This Event Means So Much to Guests and Fans of This Disney Park

This weather scare comes during what should have been a joyful, nostalgic, and highly publicized moment for Hong Kong Disneyland: its 20th anniversary.

Guests had been promised new shows, themed décor, and rare experiences as part of The Most Magical Party of All. Now, with the event under threat, fans are voicing concern and frustration across social media using hashtags like #HKDisney20 and #TyphoonWipha. Disney’s history of fast recovery may offer hope—but for now, the celebration is quite literally on pause.

With the storm hours away and updates flowing in rapidly, the most important thing is guest safety. Keep checking Disney’s official channels, and don’t let Wipha wipe away the magic completely. The celebration isn’t canceled—it’s just waiting for the skies to clear.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
