Disney Parks Bid Goodbye to Original Moana Ahead of ‘Moana 2’ Theatrical Release

Disney has announced that Moana will debut a fresh new look for meet-and-greet experiences across its theme parks just in time for the release of Moana 2.

The Polynesian wayfinder will appear in updated attire at Disney California Adventure, EPCOT, and Disneyland Paris starting on November 24, followed by Hong Kong Disneyland on November 29. This vibrant costume change is designed to reflect Moana’s evolving journey, adding a touch of adventure and excitement as Disney fans prepare to meet her and experience her story in a new way.

The refreshed look is part of Disney’s celebration of Moana 2, which opens in theaters on November 27. The film reunites Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in their beloved roles as Moana and Maui. Set three years after the first movie, the sequel follows Moana as she embarks on a new journey, prompted by an unexpected call from her ancestors that leads her and Maui into dangerous, unexplored waters across Oceania. Disney fans will get to witness Moana in her element as a wayfinder, embracing new challenges and legendary mysteries in her quest.

Moana’s presence at Disney Parks has grown over the years, becoming a popular experience for fans to connect with her character. At Disney California Adventure, guests can find her in Grizzly Peak, where the natural, rugged setting complements Moana’s adventurous spirit.

Meanwhile, EPCOT has dedicated an interactive walkthrough experience to her called Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana, where guests can explore the wonder of water and the power it holds within nature.

In Disneyland Paris, Moana makes appearances in Adventureland, where lush surroundings bring to life the Polynesian environment that has become synonymous with her story. Hong Kong Disneyland rounds out the global celebration with a stunning ocean-inspired setting where Moana welcomes fans, blending her love for the ocean with the beauty of the Pacific. With her updated costume, fans will experience a new layer of Moana’s story as they interact with her in each unique setting.

Released in 2016, Moana quickly captivated audiences, grossing over $690 million worldwide and becoming one of Disney’s most cherished animated films in recent years. The original movie was not only a financial triumph but also earned critical acclaim for its stunning animation, memorable music, and empowering storyline. As for Moana 2, the film’s release on November 27 is timed perfectly for the holiday season, adding a festive boost to Disney’s lineup. The new story picks up three years after the first movie, where Moana is living peacefully on her island. But when she receives a call from her wayfinding ancestors, she knows it’s time to venture into uncharted waters once again.

Moana and Maui set off together on a thrilling journey that leads them to the far reaches of Oceania, where they encounter dangers and mysteries unlike anything they’ve faced before. The story hints at an ambitious mission: Moana is tasked with reuniting the people of Oceania by journeying to a specific island central to the culture’s history, though the journey will be fraught with peril.

Adding to the suspense, fans have been introduced to a new antagonist named Matangi, a mysterious figure surrounded by bats and dark energy. The trailers reveal a looming purple storm that fills Maui with dread, hinting at challenges that will push the heroes to their limits.
