There is a new ship on the water, and it has one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood attached to it before it ever leaves the dock.

Disney Cruise Line's brand-new Disney Adventure is preparing for its maiden voyage out of Singapore next month, and ahead of that milestone, the company has revealed who will serve as the ship's official godparent. The answer is Robert Downey Jr. — and if you know anything about what is waiting on board, you will understand immediately why that choice is so fitting.
The tradition itself goes back centuries. Before a new vessel sets sail for the first time, a godparent is appointed to bless the ship and send it off with good fortune. It is a maritime custom that Disney has honored with every ship in its fleet. For the Disney Adventure, the largest and most ambitious ship Disney Cruise Line has ever built, they went with arguably the biggest star in the Disney universe.
It is a big deal, and depending on how you plan your Disney vacations, it might be worth paying close attention to.
The Announcement, and Why It Makes Sense
Josh D'Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences and the incoming CEO of The Walt Disney Company, put it plainly: “Our new ship continues Disney Cruise Line's tradition of bringing great stories to life at sea, and we are honored that Robert Downey Jr., who has guided audiences through unforgettable Marvel stories, is the official godparent for the Disney Adventure.”
Downey spent more than a decade as Tony Stark, the role that essentially launched the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cultural phenomenon it became. Avengers: Endgame alone pulled in over $2.79 billion worldwide. Disney named him a Disney Legend in 2019. The man is not just a celebrity guest — he is genuinely embedded in the Disney story in a meaningful way.
And the Disney Adventure reflects that. The ship is built around seven themed areas, several of which are dedicated to Marvel. Tony Stark's Ironcycle Test Run at Marvel Landing is the first roller coaster ever installed on a Disney Cruise Line ship, and it holds the record as the longest roller coaster of its kind currently sailing. The “Avengers Assemble!” stage show in the open-air Disney Imagination Garden area promises live stunts and real theatrical spectacle. Kids can also get in on the action at Marvel WEB Workshop inside Disney's Oceaneer Club, where they test Super Hero suit prototypes and run Avengers training simulations.
Downey seemed genuinely amused by the whole thing: “It's impossible to describe the majesty of the Adventure, and to be its godparent is an honor. As the largest ship in the Disney fleet, a gargantuan blessing must be bestowed… I'll do my darndest.”
What the Disney Adventure Actually Offers
For anyone thinking about where the Disney Adventure fits into vacation planning, here is the short version: it is Disney's most complete cruise ship to date. Beyond the Marvel experiences, the ship features character encounters, Broadway-caliber live shows, themed staterooms, concierge accommodations, and more than 20 dining and lounge venues. The food program leans into world-class international cuisine alongside Asian-inspired dishes, which makes sense given that the ship sails out of Singapore.
That home port is itself significant. The Disney Adventure opens up Disney's cruise lineup to a part of the world that has not had easy access to the full Disney Cruise Line experience. For travelers based in Asia, or anyone looking to build a vacation around Southeast Asia, this ship is a genuine option in a way it simply was not before.
Downey Is Also About to Take Over the MCU Again

Here is the other layer to this story. Downey is not riding off into retirement — he is heading straight back into the Marvel universe, this time playing Victor von Doom, aka Doctor Doom, in Avengers: Doomsday, hitting theaters on December 18, 2026.
The film is being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, the duo behind Infinity War and Endgame, with a script from Stephen McFeely and Loki writer Michael Waldron. The Russos coming back alone was enough to get people excited. Then the cast list dropped.
It is staggering. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach lead as the Fantastic Four. Chris Evans is back as Steve Rogers — confirmed via teaser over Christmas 2025 — alongside Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, and Tom Hiddleston. And in what might be the most surprising element of the whole thing, the original Fox X-Men are part of the story: Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, James Marsden, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, and yes, Channing Tatum as Gambit.
The story picks up the multiversal thread that has been running through the MCU since Spider-Man: No Way Home and Loki. With the Kang storyline effectively shelved after Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania‘s rough reception and Jonathan Majors' off-screen troubles, Doctor Doom steps in as the primary antagonist for this phase of the saga. The teasers released late in 2025 showed Steve Rogers as a father in his restored timeline, Thor reclaiming a more serious edge, the Fox X-Men making what looks like a last stand, and the Wakandans crossing paths with the Fantastic Four as they arrive on an unfamiliar Earth.
The film was originally set for May 2026 but was pushed to December, partly to avoid a head-on collision with The Mandalorian & Grogu in theaters and partly to give post-production the runway it needs for a movie this size. No full trailer has dropped yet, but one is expected sometime in spring 2026.
If you are building out your 2026 Disney plans and the Disney Adventure has been on your radar, the Downey connection just adds another compelling reason to look seriously at a Singapore sailing. And if you are already counting down to Avengers: Doomsday in December, pairing that with a Marvel-themed Disney cruise earlier in the year is the kind of thing Disney fans will be talking about for a long time. Do yourself a favor and check current availability — ships like this fill up faster than people expect, and the maiden voyage window does not come around twice.
