Disney World Bar Patron Charged With Trespassing After Throwing Tantrum

A New Jersey tourist’s night out at Disney Springs went completely off the rails last month, and now he’s facing criminal charges after allegedly throwing a massive tantrum when restaurant staff decided he’d had enough to drink. This is the kind of mess that shatters the Disney bubble real quick.

The Meltdown at The Polite Pig

Stephen DiGiovanna, a 61-year-old from New Jersey, is now dealing with a misdemeanor trespassing charge after what went down at The Polite Pig on December 7. For those not familiar, The Polite Pig is a barbecue spot in Disney Springs that’s become popular with bourbon and whiskey fans. It’s owned by the same people behind The Ravenous Pig in Winter Park, which has a solid reputation among Orlando locals who know their food and drink.

According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office arrest report, the whole incident kicked off shortly before 9 PM when restaurant staff made the call to cut DiGiovanna off from the bar. He was showing signs of being intoxicated, so they did what any responsible establishment would do and stopped serving him alcohol.

DiGiovanna’s response? Allegedly losing his mind. The arrest report says he got upset when he was served water instead of more booze and started yelling and throwing objects. Staff called law enforcement because the situation was escalating and DiGiovanna wasn’t calming down.

Deputies Arrive to Disney World and Find Him Still at the Bar

When Orange County Sheriff’s deputies showed up, DiGiovanna was still sitting at the bar with a plastic cup like nothing was happening. The report describes him as appearing highly intoxicated with slurred speech and basically refusing to acknowledge that he was in serious trouble.

Deputies explained to DiGiovanna that The Polite Pig is private property and the restaurant has every legal right to refuse service and ask him to leave. This is basic stuff that most adults understand. If a business tells you to leave, you leave. But DiGiovanna allegedly wasn’t having it.

The arrest report says deputies asked him multiple times to exit the premises. Multiple times. DiGiovanna kept refusing and claiming he didn’t understand why he was being asked to leave, despite getting clear explanations from both restaurant staff and law enforcement about exactly why this was happening.

Arrested After Refusing to Leave

After giving DiGiovanna several opportunities to walk out peacefully and avoid legal consequences, deputies finally placed him in handcuffs and charged him with trespassing after warning. This is what happens when you refuse to leave private property after being told repeatedly that you need to go.

Court records show DiGiovanna has pleaded not guilty to the charge. His attorney declined to comment on the case, which is probably the smartest move given the circumstances described in the arrest report.

This Happens More Than You’d Think in Disney World

Here’s what Disney doesn’t advertise in their vacation planning guides. People get arrested at Disney World all the time. DiGiovanna is one of dozens of visitors arrested annually at the resort for everything from public intoxication to battery on staff or law enforcement to excessive speeding and various other offenses.

Disney Springs operates like any entertainment district in a major city. There are bars, restaurants serving alcohol late into the night, and a mix of locals, tourists, and convention attendees all drinking in close proximity. Sometimes that combination leads to situations where guests overindulge and make spectacularly bad decisions.

The Polite Pig specifically attracts a clientele interested in craft cocktails and quality spirits alongside their barbecue. It’s a more adult-oriented spot than your typical Disney dining location. Most of the time this works fine, but when someone crosses the line from social drinking to the kind of intoxication that affects judgment and behavior, even the Disney Springs atmosphere can’t prevent what comes next.

Why Cutting People Off Matters

Restaurant staff cutting off an intoxicated guest isn’t them being jerks or ruining someone’s night. It’s a responsible alcohol service that protects everyone involved. Continuing to serve someone who’s clearly had too much creates massive liability for the establishment and puts that person at risk for accidents, health emergencies, or exactly the kind of situation DiGiovanna allegedly created.

Bartenders and servers are trained to recognize signs of intoxication and they’re legally obligated to stop service when appropriate. Yeah, guests who’ve been drinking often don’t recognize their own level of impairment and react badly when told they can’t have more alcohol. But that doesn’t change the restaurant’s responsibility to make that call.

The Disney World Bubble Isn’t Real

The incident at The Polite Pig is a harsh reminder that Disney World, despite all the theming and carefully maintained magical atmosphere, exists in the real world with real laws. Private property rights apply. Alcohol regulations matter. Law enforcement shows up when situations require intervention.

The castle and the characters don’t create some special exemption zone where consequences disappear when you act like an idiot. DiGiovanna learned that lesson the hard way.
