Disney World Closure Timeline Keeps Growing, Now Reaches 2028

Most Walt Disney World hotels lean into fantasy. Disney's Wilderness Lodge leans into the great outdoors. Instead of castles or tropical islands, guests get the feel of a grand national park lodge from the early 1900s, tucked into the pines along Bay Lake, not far from Magic Kingdom.

That feeling is no accident. When the resort opened on May 28, 1994, architect Peter Dominick had modeled it on Yellowstone's Old Faithful Inn, built in 1904. You can see it everywhere, from the soaring eight-story lobby to the giant fireplace layered like the walls of the Grand Canyon.

Then there is the showstopper outside. Fire Rock Geyser, a nod to Old Faithful itself, shoots skyward every hour on the hour between 7:00am and 10:00pm.

The resort has expanded twice since opening. Boulder Ridge Villas joined in 2000, followed by Copper Creek Villas & Cabins, a Disney Vacation Club addition, on July 17, 2017.

Now, after more than two years of construction around the property, Disney has mapped out the next chapter. And if you are planning a stay any time between now and spring 2028, you will want to know what is on the calendar.

Summer 2027 Brings a Room Refresh

Let's start with the change that will matter most to overnight guests. Disney says guest rooms in the main Wilderness Lodge hotel will be refurbished from July 2027 through September 2027.

Given the three-month window, this appears to be a soft goods refurbishment rather than a top-to-bottom rebuild. Projects like that typically involve a lighter refresh and wrap up faster than a full renovation.

If that sounds familiar, it is because the resort's villas just went through something similar. Copper Creek Villas & Cabins had its own refurbishment from mid-May through September 2025. It was the first one those rooms had received since opening in 2017.

Swim Plans Shift in Early 2028

The pool is next in line. Copper Creek Springs Pool, the resort's main pool and the spot where you will find its waterslide, is set for refurbishment from January 2028 through spring 2028.

For families who count on an afternoon swim break, that is worth noting. The upside is that Wilderness Lodge has a second option. Boulder Ridge Cove will remain available to guests during the closure.

When everything is finished, the resort will have refreshed its exteriors, villas, hotel rooms, and main pool in under four years.

Light at the End of the Timber Trail

Before any of that happens, the current project needs to finish. The exterior refurbishment at Wilderness Lodge and Copper Creek kicked off on August 5, 2024, and Disney still lists it as continuing through late 2026.

That end date has held steady. It is the same timing Disney shared in November 2025, and it lines up with a construction permit from July 2024 that carried a December 2026 expiration date.

So if the schedule holds, the exterior work has less than two months to go. Guests staying in the meantime should still expect a bit of disruption. Disney's notice says, “Guests may experience obstructed views in some areas and may see or hear construction during daytime hours.”

How We Got Here

This project has been unfolding in pieces for a while. Here is a quick look back at the key moments.

  • July 2024: A general construction permit for the resort surfaces, running through December 2026.
  • August 2024: Disney confirms exterior refurbishment work began on August 5.
  • November 2024: Disney announces a four-month refurbishment window for Copper Creek Villas & Cabins, running from mid-May through September 2025.
  • November 2025: Disney shares its first official end date for the exterior work, late 2026.
  • Most recently: Disney reveals plans for the main hotel's guest rooms in summer 2027 and Copper Creek Springs Pool in early 2028.

As always, refurbishment schedules can change, so double-check before you lock in your dates.

Meanwhile, Around the Rest of Disney World…

Wilderness Lodge isn’t the only resort in the middle of a glow-up. Here’s what else is on Disney’s construction calendar.

Caribbean Beach: Disney filed three new permits on October 23, 2026, for general construction in Old Port Royale, the resort’s main hub. The contractor is Harisson Contracting Co. Inc., and the permits run into late 2027. What’s actually being done? Disney hasn’t said.

Old Key West: A separate permit covers general construction at Building 11, home to rooms 1110 through 1124. The details are still under wraps.

Contemporary and Bay Lake Tower: Phased work continues in select areas into late 2027.

Port Orleans Riverside: Guest room refurbishments are scheduled through August 2027.

BoardWalk Inn: The Luna Park Pool and Leaping Horse Libations close from January 11 through April 2027.

Disney Skyliner: The gondolas take their annual maintenance break from January 24 through January 30, 2027, with complimentary buses running in their place.

Here’s our hot take. Next to that lineup, the Lodge’s timeline is one of the clearer ones out there. Its exterior work is almost done, the room work has a three-month window, and you know exactly when the main pool will be down.

Pack Your Flannel, Plan Your Dates

None of these projects should keep you away from Wilderness Lodge. They just reward a little planning.

If construction noise is a dealbreaker, the end of 2026 is almost here. If you have your heart set on a pool day with the waterslide, consider steering clear of January through spring 2028. And if you are curious about what the refreshed rooms will look like, a stay in fall 2027 could give you one of the first peeks.

Now it is your turn. Are you a Wilderness Lodge regular, or is it still on your Disney bucket list? We would love to know what keeps bringing you back, whether it is the lobby, the geyser, or a certain lakeside sunset. Share your favorite memory in the comments below.
