There’s something undeniably magical about strolling along Disney’s BoardWalk at night. The glow of string lights reflects on Crescent Lake, laughter echoes from nearby patios, and the scent of something sweet drifts through the air. For many guests visiting Walt Disney World, these are the moments that define a vacation.
Over the past year, one particular bakery became a lightning rod for conversation. Its towering pastel cakes, ornate chandeliers, and eye-catching prices made it one of the most photographed — and debated — dining spots on property. For some, it was an indulgent must-do. For others, it symbolized how luxury experiences continue to evolve at Disney.
Now, however, that conversation has taken a far more serious turn.

The Sweet Spot on Disney’s BoardWalk Quickly Became a Viral Sensation
When The Cake Bake Shop Restaurant by Gwendolyn Rogers opened at Disney’s BoardWalk in 2024, it didn’t take long for it to dominate social media feeds. Glittering interiors and towering cake slices — some priced at $22 each — sparked both admiration and sticker shock.
Food bloggers rushed to review the confections. Outlets like WDWNT sampled multiple slices totaling $93, fueling even more online buzz. TikTok creators debated whether the experience was worth the price, while Reddit threads dissected portion sizes and presentation.
Love it or hate it, the bakery carved out a place in Disney World’s modern dining landscape.

Behind the Scenes, Former Employees Say the Story Was Different
While guests admired frosting details and posed for photos, at least 10 former servers and bartenders have now accused the restaurant of wage violations.
According to complaints filed in small claims, Orange County Civil, and federal courts in 2025 and 2026, former employees allege they were paid under minimum wage while being required to complete extensive additional duties beyond tip-producing work.
Court records claim workers relied on tips but were assigned what lawsuits describe as “excessive” side work. These duties allegedly included cleaning, stocking, packing to-go orders, washing dishes, dusting, mopping, and managing “heavy LED lamps” at the beginning and end of shifts.
In one pending federal lawsuit filed by a former bartender, damages for alleged violations of the Florida Minimum Wage Act and the Fair Labor Standards Act are listed between $15,000 and $50,000, exclusive of costs and attorney’s fees.

A Pattern of Allegations Raises Questions About Wage Practices
Several complaints state that money was deducted from paychecks for uniform cleaning or shoe purchases. Others allege employees were required to spend up to an hour each shift preparing their work uniforms off the clock.
One lawsuit claims:
“Defendants have and continue to willfully violate the Florida Minimum Wage Act by not paying the wages owed to Plaintiff.”
Another filing alleges that side work occupied “substantial discrete and insular periods” of employees’ workdays — before shifts began, after they ended, and during extended stretches when no tip-producing tasks were performed.
Some cases filed last year reportedly reached settlements covering owed wages and legal fees before being voluntarily dismissed. However, at least one federal case remains pending.
The restaurant declined to comment directly on the allegations but issued a statement through Vice President Angie Daniel to WDWNT:
“We remain firmly committed to our team members, who are the foundation of our organization. We take great pride in their professionalism, dedication, and the care they bring to their work each day. We are equally committed to fostering a respectful, positive workplace where every member of our team feels supported and has the opportunity to thrive.”

The Allegations Come Amid Ongoing Conversations About Disney Dining Costs
The Cake Bake Shop’s rise to fame was intertwined with larger discussions about pricing at Walt Disney World. From Lightning Lane strategies to premium dining experiences, guests have increasingly debated the value of high-end offerings.
Social media reaction to the wage allegations has been swift. On X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit, some users expressed disappointment, calling the news “a shocking development” tied to a restaurant already known for controversy. Others urged caution, pointing out that lawsuits represent allegations and not final judgments.
Fans are heartbroken at the idea that a location so closely associated with celebration and indulgence could now be tied to legal disputes. At the same time, others say they’re waiting for court outcomes before forming firm opinions.

What This Means for Guests Planning a Disney World Visit
As of now, The Cake Bake Shop continues operating at Disney’s BoardWalk. There has been no announcement from Walt Disney World regarding operational changes related to the lawsuits.
For guests planning upcoming trips, the bakery remains open, and its elaborate cake slices are still drawing crowds. However, the controversy adds a new layer to what was once purely a conversation about price and presentation.
The end of an era? Not quite. But the magic feels more complicated.
Legal proceedings are ongoing, and settlements in some cases show movement behind the scenes. Whether this becomes a broader issue affecting Disney dining operations remains to be seen.
For now, travelers strolling along Crescent Lake will still see pastel cakes glowing beneath chandeliers — but many are watching closely to see how the situation unfolds.
What do you think? Does this change your plans to visit The Cake Bake Shop at Disney World, or are you waiting for more details to emerge?
