One of the most controversial scenes in Disney Park history just got a quiet upgrade. The change Walt Disney World Resort made on August 5 puts to rest, at least for now, the years-long debate over whether the hanging corpse would ever be removed from the Stretching Room of the Haunted Mansion.
Two Weeks of Uncertainty
The saga began on July 24, when Magic Kingdom Park guests noticed that the hanging corpse was no longer visible in the left Stretching Room of the Haunted Mansion. The timing — arriving during a multi-month exterior refurbishment of the attraction — immediately fueled speculation that Walt Disney World Resort had quietly made the cultural sensitivity update that Walt Disney Imagineers had been openly discussing for years.
The reaction was swift and divided. Disney Parks fans who had long advocated for the removal of the suicide scene celebrated. Those who considered the hanging corpse an irreplaceable piece of the Haunted Mansion's identity were equally vocal in their opposition.
Walt Disney World Resort stepped in quickly, offering a decidedly unglamorous explanation. The corpse hadn't been removed at all. The scrim that conceals the hanging doll during most of the Stretching Room pre-show had accumulated so much dirt and debris — possibly from the ongoing exterior construction — that the figure had simply become invisible through the fabric. The scrim was cleaned by July 27, the corpse reappeared, and most people assumed the matter was settled.
It wasn't.
The August 5 Update
On August 5, WDWNT reported that Walt Disney World Resort had returned to the left Stretching Room with something more substantial than a cleaning — a full scrim replacement. The original fabric, even after being cleaned, still showed residual staining from years of accumulated dust. The new scrim features shading around the triangular ceiling patterns that preserves the aged, atmospheric quality associated with the Haunted Mansion aesthetic, but without the real wear that had rendered the old fabric nearly opaque.
Alongside the new scrim, the lighting in the left Stretching Room has been adjusted. The hanging corpse is now more prominently visible as it descends above guests during the pre-show — a deliberate enhancement rather than an incidental byproduct of the fabric swap. The scrim in the right Stretching Room, which never became dirty enough to hide the figure, has not been replaced.
Where the Conversation Stands
The question of the hanging corpse's future has been part of Disney's internal conversation for years. In 2021, Imagineer Michele Hobbs confirmed the discussion was happening: “It's been discussed for sure. It's definitely something that we're thinking about.” In 2024, fellow Imagineer Kim Irvine added to the ambiguity: “We're still looking at that. That one is complicated, structurally… One thing at a time.”
More recent reports from inside the company have suggested that active consideration of removal has been set aside. The August 5 update appears to confirm that direction. Walt Disney World Resort didn't use its recent refurbishment activity as an opportunity to phase out the scene; it used it to make the scene clearer and more impactful than it has been in years.
For 54 years, that hanging doll has been dropping from the ceiling of the Haunted Mansion's Stretching Room. Based on what happened this week, it's not going anywhere soon.
