Anyone who has visited Walt Disney World knows every park offers a different experience. Disney's Animal Kingdom has always stood out not only for its focus on wildlife and conservation but also for its operating hours. While the rest of Walt Disney World often stays busy well into the evening, Animal Kingdom usually wraps up the day much earlier.
That schedule has frustrated guests for years, especially those hoping to experience the park after sunset. Now, as Disney continues one of Animal Kingdom's biggest transformations in decades, the long-requested change many fans have talked about could finally become a realistic possibility.
Why Animal Kingdom Closes Earlier Than the Other Parks
Unlike Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, and Disney's Hollywood Studios, Animal Kingdom isn't designed around late-night entertainment.
Most days, the park closes between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., with 8:30 p.m. being one of its later closing times. Depending on the time of year, that can mean guests leave while it's still daylight outside.
The reason is fairly straightforward. Animal Kingdom isn't just a theme park—it's also home to hundreds of animals that require daily care. Feeding routines, veterinary services, habitat maintenance, and overnight operations all continue after guests leave, making the park much different from Disney's other three Florida parks.
Even with those unique challenges, many visitors have wondered whether Disney could eventually find a way to keep the gates open a little longer.
Pandora Shows What Guests Are Missing
Much of that discussion centers on one part of the park.
When Pandora – The World of Avatar opened in 2017, Disney created an environment that changes dramatically once the sun goes down. The glowing walkways, illuminated plants, and colorful scenery give the land an entirely different appearance after dark.
The problem is that many guests never get to experience it.
Because Animal Kingdom frequently closes around sunset or shortly afterward, countless visitors leave before Pandora reaches its full nighttime effect. For many Disney fans, that's one of the biggest missed opportunities anywhere at Walt Disney World.
The demand for later hours isn't just about the scenery, either. Cooler evening temperatures also make walking through the park and enjoying attractions like Avatar Flight of Passage and Na'vi River Journey much more comfortable.
A Growing Park May Need More Operating Time
Animal Kingdom is preparing for a significant expansion with Pueblo Esperanza, the new Tropical Americas-themed land replacing the former DinoLand U.S.A.
The project will introduce attractions inspired by Encanto (2021) and Indiana Jones, along with additional dining, shopping, and entertainment. Once everything opens, guests will have far more to experience than they do today.
That naturally raises an important question.
If visitors are spending more time inside the park, does Animal Kingdom need longer operating hours to support that growth?
Disney will still have to balance guest demand with the care of the animals that live at the park. However, as Animal Kingdom becomes a larger, more complete destination, extending the day could become a practical way to improve the overall guest experience.
What Could New Park Hours Look Like?
If Disney ever makes the change, it's unlikely Animal Kingdom would suddenly stay open until midnight.
A more reasonable expectation would be regular closing times around 9 p.m. or even 10 p.m. That would give guests another hour or two to experience attractions, enjoy dinner, and explore Pandora after dark.
Longer evenings could also create a better flow throughout the day. Guests wouldn't feel as much pressure to rush through every attraction before sunset, and crowds could spread out more naturally during the afternoon and evening.
For families in particular, that extra flexibility could make it easier to experience more of the park in a single visit.
The Timing May Finally Be Right
Animal Kingdom has changed dramatically since opening in 1998, and its next evolution may involve more than new attractions.
Disney hasn't announced plans to extend the park's hours, so any discussion remains speculation for now. Still, the arrival of Pueblo Esperanza allows the company to rethink how guests experience the park from opening until closing.
If Disney decides the expanded park deserves a longer day, it would address one of the biggest complaints Animal Kingdom has faced for years. More nighttime access would allow guests to experience Pandora as it was designed while giving visitors extra time to enjoy everything else the growing park has to offer.
