“A Shocking Development”: Disney’s Contemporary Resort Walkway and Tower Impacted by Major Refurbishment

What You Need To Understand Before Your Next Vacation

For decades, Disney’s Contemporary Resort has stood as one of the most recognizable landmarks at Walt Disney World Resort. Its towering A-frame structure, the iconic monorail gliding through its atrium, and its proximity to Magic Kingdom Park have made it a bucket-list destination for Disney fans around the world.

Opened alongside the park in 1971, the resort was envisioned by The Walt Disney Company as a bold symbol of the future. Its sleek architecture and cutting-edge construction methods helped define what a “modern” vacation could look like during Walt Disney’s original vision for the Florida resort.

Today, guests staying at the Contemporary often expect seamless convenience: a short walk to Magic Kingdom, sweeping views of Bay Lake, and easy access to beloved Disney experiences. For many longtime fans, staying at the Contemporary isn’t just a hotel stay—it’s part of the magic itself.

But lately, that experience has come with some noticeable changes.

Guests Begin Noticing Subtle Shifts Around the Iconic Resort

Over the past year, guests visiting Disney’s Contemporary Resort have reported signs of ongoing work across various areas of the property. Construction walls, maintenance activity, and temporary closures have appeared throughout sections of the resort complex.

These projects haven’t necessarily disrupted the entire guest experience, but they have raised questions among frequent visitors and Disney Vacation Club members staying at nearby Bay Lake Tower, the resort’s connected timeshare property.

Guests walking between buildings have occasionally encountered temporary reroutes or maintenance zones, while some amenities have been taken offline for routine work.

As a result, travelers planning upcoming vacations have begun asking a key question: how extensive will these refurbishments become?

A Larger Pattern of Updates Is Emerging Across the Resort

The work currently underway at the Contemporary isn’t happening in isolation. In fact, refurbishment projects have been occurring in phases throughout several areas of the resort since September 2024.

Recent projects have included updates in the main atrium space, improvements at Bay Lake Tower, and other maintenance work designed to preserve one of Walt Disney World’s oldest and most recognizable resorts.

Disney regularly performs refurbishment work across its resorts to maintain safety standards, enhance guest experiences, and modernize infrastructure.

However, the newest phase of work is expected to affect areas that guests use frequently when navigating the property.

Social Media Reactions Show Fans Watching the Situation Closely

As news of the ongoing projects spreads, Disney fans have taken to social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit to discuss how the updates may affect their stays.

Some guests say construction activity is a normal part of staying at Walt Disney World, where improvements and refurbishments happen year-round across hotels, attractions, and transportation systems.

Others have expressed concern about potential travel disruptions within the resort complex—particularly for guests who rely on walkways between the Contemporary’s Main Tower and Bay Lake Tower.

Still, many longtime fans remain optimistic, noting that Disney refurbishment projects often lead to improved experiences once construction wraps up.

Disney Confirms Skyway Bridge Closure and Tower Maintenance Beginning in March

Beginning March 30 through May 1, 2026, a key walkway at the resort will be temporarily impacted as refurbishment work moves forward.

The Skyway Bridge, which connects Bay Lake Tower and the Contemporary Main Tower, will close Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during this period. The bridge will reopen each evening after 5 p.m. and remain available on weekends.

During these weekday closures, guests may need to use alternate paths to travel between the two buildings. Disney has also warned visitors that they may see or hear construction activity while work is taking place.

Additional updates are planned across the property as well.

The Main Tower will undergo exterior maintenance beginning March 23, 2026, which could impact views from certain areas of the resort and occasionally require alternate walking routes for guests.

At Bay Lake Tower, exterior elevator landing repairs are scheduled from late March through late May 2026.

Meanwhile, several recreational areas remain temporarily closed for maintenance, including the Bay Cove Pool, Cove Bar, water play area, and whirlpool spa at Bay Lake Tower. Guests can still use the Main Pool, water play area, and whirlpool spa located at Disney’s Contemporary Resort.

A Difficult Moment in the Resort’s Recent History Still Lingers

The refurbishment updates come months after a tragic event that shook the Disney community.

In October 2025, a 31-year-old guest named Summer Equitz died after jumping from a balcony at the Contemporary Resort. Witnesses described hearing a loud noise before the incident occurred, with the guest landing near the resort’s observation area.

The tragedy stunned visitors and cast a somber tone over the beloved Disney hotel.

While Disney has not publicly linked the current refurbishment projects to the incident, some fans online have expressed hope that continued improvements to the resort will enhance safety for future guests.

What These Changes Could Mean for Future Disney Resort Guests

For travelers planning to stay at Disney’s Contemporary Resort this spring, the refurbishment work may mean adjusting travel routes within the property or encountering daytime construction activity.

However, the resort remains open, and most major amenities—including the main pool area—continue operating as normal.

For many Disney fans, the updates are simply part of the resort’s ongoing evolution.

As one of the original Walt Disney World hotels, the Contemporary has been updated many times over the decades while continuing to maintain its place as a cornerstone of the resort.

Still, for guests preparing for upcoming vacations, the changes are something to keep in mind.

Since first stepping inside the Magic Kingdom at nine years old, I knew I was destined to be a theme Park enthusiast. Although I consider myself a theme Park junkie, I still have much to learn and discover about Disney. Universal Orlando Resort has my heart; being an Annual Passholder means visiting my favorite places on Earth when possible! When I’m not writing about Disney, Universal, or entertainment news, you’ll find me cruising on my motorcycle, hiking throughout my local metro parks, or spending quality time with my girlfriend, family, or friends.
