Walt Disney World is walking away from part of its original EPCOT transformation, and crews have already started removing a feature that debuted less than three years ago.
What was supposed to become a beautiful addition to the park's nighttime atmosphere has instead turned into a frustrating maintenance problem. After repeated repairs, closures, and ongoing issues, Disney has apparently decided that keeping the feature simply isn't worth the trouble anymore.
Now, portions of EPCOT are once again behind barriers as the company moves forward with a permanent replacement.

Disney Begins Removing Major EPCOT Feature
The changes are happening inside World Celebration Gardens, one of the central areas introduced during EPCOT's massive transformation.
When the gardens opened in December 2023, Disney installed illuminated strips throughout the pavement. These lights formed a massive EPCOT logo around the central courtyard and complemented the lighting effects on Spaceship Earth.
The feature also paid tribute to the illuminated pavement that once existed in Future World before Disney redesigned the area.
Unfortunately, the new system never worked as intended.
Disney began blocking off sections of World Celebration Gardens in August 2026, placing large planters around portions of the courtyard.
Construction crews subsequently started removing the illuminated strips from the pavement.
As of October 8, some previously restricted areas have reopened, revealing what Disney plans to use instead.
Disney Replaces Original Design With Concrete
Rather than installing another lighting system, Disney is filling the former illuminated sections with decorative white concrete containing small rocky flecks.
The replacement follows the original EPCOT logo pattern, allowing the courtyard to maintain its recognizable design without the lighting effects.
However, work remains unfinished.
Another section of the gardens toward the west remains closed off with planters while crews continue removing the remaining lighting components.
For guests, that means additional construction activity and restricted access in an area that only opened in late 2023.

Years of Problems Lead to Permanent Removal
The lighting system reportedly began experiencing problems almost immediately after World Celebration Gardens opened.
Some sections stopped illuminating, while others failed to synchronize correctly with Spaceship Earth's nighttime lighting.
The plastic coverings also warped and cracked, creating potential tripping hazards.
Disney attempted multiple repairs, including securing troublesome coverings with screws, but the problems continued.
Eventually, the company moved toward removing the lights entirely.
Interestingly, EPCOT's older Future World pavement lighting used different technology and reportedly avoided these same recurring issues.
While Disney is preserving the courtyard's EPCOT logo design, the original illuminated effect is disappearing permanently.
It's a disappointing outcome for a feature intended to celebrate the park's history while embracing its future.
And with construction still underway, guests visiting EPCOT may continue encountering temporary closures until the replacement work is complete.
