The Disneyland Hotel has been welcoming guests for nearly 71 years, but some recent visitors say the experience no longer matches the price.
The hotel opened in October 1955, just months after Disneyland itself. It was originally built and operated by businessman Jack Wrather rather than The Walt Disney Company, which did not acquire the property until 1988.
Over the decades, the Disneyland Hotel has changed significantly. Large parts of the original complex were demolished during the development of Downtown Disney, while the remaining towers were renovated and renamed Adventure, Fantasy, and Frontier.
Disney expanded the resort again in 2023 with The Villas at Disneyland Hotel. The Disney Vacation Club property introduced the new Discovery Tower, adding hundreds of rooms to the historic hotel complex.
Nearly three years later, however, some guests are questioning whether staying at the Disneyland Hotel is still worth its premium price.
Recent Guests Criticize Disneyland Hotel Conditions
Several recent guests have shared complaints about their stays on Reddit, with cleanliness, noise, and room conditions among the biggest issues raised.
One guest said they paid $7,000 for four nights at The Villas at Disneyland Hotel and arrived to find “someone else’s breakfast on the floor.”
They also claimed that one of the room’s pull-out beds fell apart while being used and that a grocery delivery was temporarily lost by the hotel.
Noise was another problem during the same stay. The guest said music from the restaurant area made it difficult for their toddler to sleep, while noise from the pool also disturbed the adults.
Their conclusion was straightforward: “Not worth it!”
Another visitor reported similar concerns about cleanliness. They said their first room smelled “funky” and was dusty, while a replacement room still had crumbs on the floor.
Disney reportedly responded to the complaint. According to the guest, the hotel dealt with the room issue and gave their party anytime Lightning Lane access for each day of their trip.
Other guests have raised concerns about comfort.
One family described their stay as “fine,” but said the fold-out sofa was so uncomfortable that their son “barely slept.” When they asked for something to make the bed softer, they said they were given a “super thin, old, blue blanket.”
Construction has also been visible around the hotel in recent months.
Walls were installed around a large section near the Disneyland Hotel’s main entrance in July, blocking its three entrance fountains from view. Nearby walkways remained open.
Disney has not publicly confirmed exactly what work is taking place in that area or when it will be completed.
The project follows other refurbishment work around the hotel this year, including activity involving Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar and Tangaroa Terrace.
Is Disneyland Hotel Still Worth the Price?
The Disneyland Hotel still offers several advantages, particularly for guests who want to stay on Disney property.
The resort has two pools, Monorail-themed waterslides, Goofy’s Kitchen, Trader Sam’s Enchanted Tiki Bar, Tangaroa Terrace, and Disney-themed rooms inspired by Disneyland attractions.
Its location also puts guests close to Downtown Disney and within walking distance of both Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure.
However, one major hotel perk disappeared at the beginning of 2026.
Until January 5, Disneyland Resort hotel guests received 30 minutes of early entry to a designated theme park each day.
Disney replaced that benefit with one complimentary Lightning Lane entry per registered hotel guest during their stay. The entry can be used for one participating Lightning Lane Multi Pass attraction, subject to availability.
Several guests specifically mentioned the removal of early entry when discussing whether the Disneyland Hotel still represents good value.
One visitor who stayed at the hotel in 2012 said it was “really nice” at the time. After returning more recently, they described it as “average at best” and said it was “barely worth it now that they got rid of early entry.”
Another longtime visitor chose the Disneyland Hotel for their wife’s first Disney trip but said the experience did not match their expectations.
They cited a dusty room, an uncomfortable bed, a check-in problem that took more than an hour to resolve, crowded pools, and limited food options.
These complaints do not reflect every stay at the Disneyland Hotel, but they have renewed discussion about the value of Disney’s on-property hotels.
Disneyland Hotel is one of three official Disneyland Resort hotels. Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa offers a more upscale experience and direct access to Disney California Adventure, while Pixar Place Hotel offers Pixar-themed rooms and its own pool deck.
Guests also have plenty of off-property options.
Anaheim has dozens of hotels within walking distance of Disneyland Resort, including several Good Neighbor Hotels. Many are located along Harbor Boulevard directly across from or close to the parks and can cost considerably less than Disney-owned hotels.
