Disney’s Hollywood Studios Drained as Park Issues New Statement to Guests

There's something a little jarring about walking up to Echo Lake at Disney's Hollywood Studios right now and finding no water at all.

The lake has been part of that section of the park for decades, quietly reflecting the surrounding buildings and giving the area its calm, retro Hollywood atmosphere. That scenery has changed dramatically for the time being, with the entire lake drained and construction scaffolding now dominating the view. This isn't happening in isolation either, since it's just one piece of a busier than usual stretch of development taking shape across Hollywood Studios right now. Here's what's actually going on, and what it means if you're planning a visit soon.

Echo Lake Goes Dry for Ongoing Construction

The refurbishment work currently underway at Echo Lake centers specifically on the S.S. Down the Hatch, the boat shaped structure that houses Dockside Diner. Right now, the lake bed is completely empty, and scaffolding wraps around large sections of the boat's hull and upper deck, replacing the usual water views with a construction zone.

Even with all that work happening, Dockside Diner hasn't actually closed. A significant portion of the structure is covered in scaffolding, but the counter-service window is still open, continuing to serve its normal lunch and dinner menus during regular hours. Seating around the lake also remains available for guests who want to eat in the area despite the ongoing project.

Signs posted around the perimeter of the site explain the situation simply: “Please pardon our appearance. Keeping our city beautiful. Echo Lake is being refurbished for your future enjoyment.” There's no announced completion date yet, so this altered version of Echo Lake is likely going to stick around for a while.

Piecing Together the Timeline

WDWNT reported on August 17 that guests arriving at Disney's Hollywood Studios found the S.S. Down the Hatch fully surrounded by metal scaffolding, covering the water side, the dock side, and both ends of the boat. That scaffolding went up shortly after Echo Lake itself was drained the week before, a move that likely gave crews the access they needed to carry out this project, and possibly others in the same general area, without water getting in the way.

So far, Walt Disney World Resort hasn't released any official statement about the drained lake or offered a specific timeline for when the work will be finished. For now, guests are left piecing together progress based on what's visible on site and whatever updates the posted signage happens to offer.

Gertie's Recent Repair Adds Context

This isn't the first bit of maintenance Echo Lake has seen recently either. Walt Disney World Resort just wrapped up a repair to the tail of Gertie the Dinosaur, another one of the lake's most recognizable landmarks. The bright green dinosaur shaped building is home to Dinosaur Gertie's Ice Cream of Extinction, a separate Quick-Service location that stayed open throughout its own repair work and continues running as usual even with the larger Echo Lake project happening nearby.

Between Gertie's recent fix and the current work centered on Dockside Diner, it's clear Disney has been actively maintaining several of Echo Lake's signature features, even if the timing has made this stretch of construction more noticeable than guests might typically expect in one section of the park.

Hollywood Studios Has a Lot Going On Right Now

The Echo Lake project isn't the only construction happening at Disney's Hollywood Studios at the moment. Not far away, near the existing Star Wars, Galaxy's Edge area, Walt Disney World Resort is developing an entirely new land inspired by Monsters, Inc. (2001). That project is unrelated to the Echo Lake refurbishment, but together they paint a picture of a park that's genuinely in the middle of an active development period, with visible construction happening in more than one spot at once.

For guests who like keeping tabs on Disney's ongoing expansion, this is a good stretch to pay closer attention to Hollywood Studios specifically, since multiple unrelated projects appear to be progressing simultaneously right now.

Planning Your Next Hollywood Studios Trip Around This

If a trip to Disney's Hollywood Studios is on your calendar soon, it's worth adjusting your expectations around Echo Lake. The area looks noticeably different right now, with an empty lake bed and visible scaffolding standing in for the usual calm water views. That said, this shouldn't meaningfully disrupt your actual day at the park. Dockside Diner remains open with its full menu, Dinosaur Gertie's Ice Cream of Extinction continues operating normally, and seating around the lake is still available if you'd like to eat in that area.

If capturing Echo Lake's classic reflective water views is normally part of your photo routine during a visit, it might be worth holding off until the refurbishment wraps up, since current construction will likely show up in the background of shots taken from that spot. On the flip side, if you enjoy watching Disney's construction projects unfold in real time, this section of Hollywood Studios currently offers a genuinely interesting glimpse into that process, between the Echo Lake work and the developing Monsters, Inc. land nearby.

Have you eaten at Dockside Diner recently, or seen the drained Echo Lake in person? Share what you noticed in the comments, we'd love to hear your take on how the refurbishment is shaping up so far.
