Disney’s Hottest New Popcorn Bucket Sold Out in Hours

Disney popcorn buckets move fast when they are good. This one was gone the same morning it launched.

The Lightning McQueen popcorn bucket released today at Disney's Hollywood Studios in honor of the 20th anniversary of Cars, and as of this writing it has already sold out. The bucket was released in limited supply and Disney has not confirmed whether additional inventory is coming. It is also confirmed to be releasing at Disneyland Resort, so the West Coast window is still open.

For guests who were planning to pick one up during an upcoming trip, here is the full picture: what the bucket looks like, where to find it, what the sold out status actually means for your visit, and why the Cars anniversary makes this release worth paying attention to beyond just the merchandise angle.

The Bucket Itself

The design is thorough. The Lightning McQueen popcorn bucket is a sculptural replica of the character built with the details that Cars fans are going to notice. Rust-eze decals on the sides and roof. The number 95 in the right places. Lightyear-branded tires, consistent with the film.

The top of the car opens to store popcorn. A detachable strap with racing checks and the Disney Parks logo is included. Rolling the bucket activates its sound effects, and a wheel lock feature lets you hold it stationary for display purposes without it rolling away. The functional design makes it genuinely usable rather than just displayable.

Lighting effects are activated by a switch. The windshield, mouth, headlights, and numbers glow white. Red lighting runs along the hood and undercarriage, which casts light on the surface below. At $30, it is positioned as a collectible, which is accurate given the level of detail and the built-in electronics.

There is a two per person per transaction limit.

Theme Park Scope was among the first to spot it: “KA-CHOW! The brand-new Lightning McQueen Popcorn Bucket has officially raced into Walt Disney World! Spotted in Disney's Hollywood Studios for $30.”

Where It Is and What Sold Out Means

The bucket is located at the popcorn kiosk in the center of Disney's Hollywood Studios, near the braille map. That is worth noting specifically because kiosks at Hollywood Studios are not always immediately obvious to guests who are not looking for them.

As of the morning release, the bucket sold out at that location. Limited supply releases at Disney parks tend to follow one of two paths: a restock arrives within days, or that first wave is the only allocation and the item moves to the secondary market. Disney has not indicated which applies here. Checking the Shop Disney Parks app and following Disney merchandise accounts on social media is the most reliable way to catch a restock announcement before it happens at the kiosk.

The Disneyland Resort release is still ahead. If Hollywood Studios inventory does not return and a Disneyland trip is realistic, that window provides an alternative. Given the demand this morning at Walt Disney World, planning ahead for the Disneyland release is worth doing rather than assuming it will be available whenever you happen to arrive.

Why the Cars 20th Anniversary Changes the Context

This is not a standard limited merchandise drop. The 20th anniversary of Cars is an actual milestone, and Disney and Pixar are treating it accordingly.

Cars opened in 2006 and did something that relatively few animated films manage: it built lasting infrastructure. Radiator Springs Racers at Disney California Adventure became one of the most beloved attractions in the parks. The franchise extended across sequels, shorts, and merchandise that has stayed relevant for two decades. The enthusiasm for Cars among adults who grew up with it runs alongside the enthusiasm from a new generation of kids encountering it now.

The theatrical return this September is the significant piece. Cars going back to theaters means fresh conversations about the film, new audiences seeing it for the first time, and older fans returning to something they care about with the experience of adulthood behind them. That context makes a limited-edition collectible land differently than it would during a quieter moment in the franchise's calendar.

The popcorn bucket releasing on the anniversary and alongside a theatrical return is deliberate timing. For Cars fans, this is the version of the anniversary worth marking.

What This Means for Your Hollywood Studios Visit

The sold out status creates two situations depending on your travel timeline.

If you are visiting Hollywood Studios in the near term, the bucket may or may not be available when you arrive. Checking status before your trip gives you accurate expectations. Arriving hoping to find it without checking is a reasonable approach if the bucket is not a priority, but if it is something you specifically want, a quick check of current availability before you go will save a frustrating walk to an empty kiosk.

If your trip is further out, the situation may resolve itself in either direction before you arrive. A restock announcement would change the calculus entirely. No restock means the secondary market is likely your remaining option after a certain point, at prices that will reflect the demand this morning generated.

For families with young Cars fans, the broader anniversary context makes a Hollywood Studios visit during this period feel like more than a standard park day. The theatrical return in September adds something to the conversation that will resonate with kids who are just discovering the film alongside parents who grew up with it. That overlap is genuinely worth experiencing when it happens naturally around an anniversary like this one.
