“As some of you may know, I have had issues, and now I have lost my sight,” Elton shared with the audience. “I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed it. To my husband, who’s been my rock because I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews… It’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it, and it sounded good tonight.”

Elton appeared on stage with the support of his husband, David Furnish, who has been a pillar of strength throughout this health battle. Furnish guided Elton on and off the stage, a poignant moment underscoring the challenges the beloved artist now faces.

The news of Elton’s vision loss comes months after he first revealed in September that he was struggling with limited vision in his right eye due to a severe infection. At the time, Elton had shared an optimistic outlook, stating that while the recovery process would be slow, he was hopeful for a full restoration of his sight.

In a candid November interview with Good Morning America, Elton elaborated on how his impaired vision has impacted his life and work. “It’s been a while since I’ve done anything,” he admitted. “There’s hope and encouragement that it will be OK. But I’m kind of stuck in the moment because I can do something like this, but going into the studio and recording… I don’t know. Because I can’t see a lyric, for start.”

This health setback adds to a series of medical challenges the artist has faced over the years. Elton has long joked about his resilience, quipping at the New York premiere of his documentary Elton John: Never Too Late, “There’s not much of me left.” Despite losing various organs to surgeries and health complications—including his prostate, knees, and hip—Elton credits music as his guiding light through every dark period.

“Even when I was in my darkest times, I still played music, I still recorded music, so I have to say thank you to music for being the most incredible inspiration to me throughout my whole life,” Elton reflected.
