Construction walls at Disney parks can be major vacation spoilers. After spending months planning your trip—researching every food item and beverage you want to try and crafting an itinerary to hit specific spots at specific times—you arrive only to find your most anticipated location hidden behind unsightly construction barriers. This can genuinely ruin your day. When you’re paying Disney prices for park tickets, hotel rooms, and everything else, that disappointment feels even more pronounced.
Garden House, the small sake kiosk located in EPCOT’s Japan pavilion, has been a frustrating casualty of recent changes. It closed in July, leaving fans of its signature Violet Sake scrambling to find alternative options. Fortunately, Disney made an effort to accommodate guests by relocating the Violet Sake service to Katsura Grill during the closure, so the drink wasn’t completely unavailable in the pavilion. However, ordering violet sake from a quick-service restaurant counter lacks the same charm as enjoying it at the dedicated kiosk nestled in the picturesque setting of the Japan pavilion.
With the construction walls down, the changes to Garden House are surprising. Disney has not only repainted but also dramatically altered the building’s layout, relocating doors and windows. This transformation prompts questions about plans for the space. Unfortunately, Disney hasn’t revealed when it will reopen, its new name, or if Violet Sake will return.
What Actually Changed
The refurbishment was not merely cosmetic; Disney fundamentally changed the structure’s design and functionality, which involved significant construction work. The front of the building, which previously had doors for guests to place their orders, now features windows. Conversely, two sides of the building that previously had windows now have doors. This is not a minor adjustment; it required extensive reworking of the entire stone foundation to close off the old entrances and create new ones on the sides.
Additionally, all the decorative wood elements that were previously attached below the windows have been removed. The entire building has been repainted, giving it a fresh Disney appearance, suggesting that they intend to utilize it rather than leave it dormant. All signage and decorative details have been taken down, which may indicate a complete rebranding or simply that they are waiting until closer to reopening to add the finishing touches.
The straw roof, which contributes to Garden House’s distinctive Japanese architectural character and helps it blend into the overall aesthetic of the pavilion, remains intact. This is encouraging because replacing or significantly altering that roof would have extended the timeline by months and likely indicated that Disney was planning something dramatically different for the space.
The Violet Sake Situation at EPCOT
Here’s what has everyone feeling anxious: Garden House became famous for its Violet Sake, a drink that quickly gained popularity as one of EPCOT’s most Instagram-worthy beverages. This striking purple-colored sake has appeared in countless social media posts, building a loyal following among regular park visitors. It wasn’t just tourists who tried it once; many repeat customers, Annual Passholders, and EPCOT festival enthusiasts included violet sake as a staple of their visits to the Japan pavilion.
When Garden House closed in July for refurbishment, Disney temporarily relocated the Violet Sake to Katsura Grill, allowing guests to continue ordering it. While this solution allowed the drink to remain available, it left some uncertainty about whether violet sake was always intended to be exclusive to Garden House or if Disney was testing its viability at Katsura Grill.
With Garden House’s refurbishment complete but still closed, fans are worried about Disney’s plans. What if they decide Violet Sake works better at Katsura Grill and don’t bring it back? What if Garden House is rebranded and no longer serves sake? Concerns grow about potential long delays without a clear reopening date.
These concerns are reasonable. Disney has a history of closing beloved food locations for refurbishment, often taking a long time to reopen them or sometimes bringing them back with entirely different concepts that strip away what made them special in the first place.
The Information Vacuum Problem
Guests planning visits to EPCOT are finding the situation particularly frustrating due to the complete lack of official information from Disney. There hasn’t been an announced reopening date, no confirmation about whether the Garden House name will be retained, and no details about the menu. Additionally, there is no indication of whether Violet Sake will return or if it has been permanently relocated to Katsura Grill.
Travelers who book trips months in advance and research available offerings for their visits cannot effectively plan around Garden House, as Disney has not publicly provided any information. If you are visiting in January and prioritize Violet Sake at Garden House, there is no way to know if it will be open. The same uncertainty applies to those staying in March. This lack of clarity makes it challenging for guests who are focused on specific food and beverage experiences to plan their trips effectively.
The physical changes to the building suggest that operational improvements may be underway, rather than purely aesthetic updates. For instance, moving the entry points from the front to the sides likely addresses guest flow patterns, cast member efficiency, or accessibility considerations. However, without an explanation from Disney, this remains speculative.
What This Means For EPCOT Right Now
For anyone planning to visit EPCOT in the near future, the Garden House remains closed, despite the construction walls having come down. It’s best not to expect it to be operational anytime soon. If Violet Sake is important to you, it is currently available at Katsura Grill, unless Disney changes that arrangement.
On a positive note, the Japan pavilion looks much better without construction barriers obstructing views and creating dead zones. Earlier this year, a new gashapon kiosk opened nearby, offering guests the chance to engage with Japanese capsule toy machines, which adds a fun element to the area.
However, the situation with the Garden House is still unresolved. Disney’s lack of communication is fueling speculation and concern among fans of Violet Sake, who simply want to know if their favorite EPCOT beverage will return to its original home or if this refurbishment signals the end of an era.
