Going to Disney World This Month? 5 Major Closures in Effect Across the Resort

A trip to Walt Disney World rarely looks the same from one visit to the next, and August 2026 is a good example.

Crews remain busy throughout the resort as Disney tackles refurbishments, attraction updates, and larger construction projects. That work may eventually deliver refreshed and updated experiences, but guests visiting right now have to deal with the other side of the equation.

Several familiar locations aren't available this month. Some should return before the year ends, while others won't welcome guests again until 2027.

Here's what August visitors should know about five experiences currently affected across Disney World.

Carousel of Progress Faces a Lengthy Closure

One of the longest waits can be found in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom.

Walt Disney's Carousel of Progress closed on July 6, 2026, beginning an extensive refurbishment. Unlike several other projects happening around the resort, this one will stretch beyond the end of the year.

Disney expects the attraction to reopen sometime in 2027, but hasn't announced an exact date.

When Carousel of Progress returns, guests will encounter several updates. Disney is refreshing portions of the attraction while keeping its history and connection to Walt Disney at the center of the experience.

One notable addition will be a new introductory scene featuring an Audio-Animatronic figure of Walt Disney.

For August visitors, however, the attraction will remain completely unavailable.

Mickey Shorts Theater Begins Its Temporary Closure

A much newer closure is affecting Disney's Hollywood Studios.

Mickey Shorts Theater closed on August 9, 2026, meaning guests visiting this month won't have access to its regular theater experience.

The space won't sit unused during the closure.

Disney plans to temporarily use Mickey Shorts Theater as a distribution location for an exclusive Annual Passholder magnet.

Unlike Carousel of Progress, this closure isn't expected to continue into next year. Mickey Shorts Theater should reopen later in 2026, although Disney hasn't provided a specific date.

While that closure only recently began, another location has been unavailable since winter.

Big Top Souvenirs Has Been Closed Since February

Big Top Souvenirs remains unavailable to guests visiting Storybook Circus at Magic Kingdom.

The merchandise location closed on February 20, 2026, and hasn't reopened since.

Disney expects the shop to welcome guests again later in 2026, but the company hasn't announced exactly when that will happen.

Until then, visitors spending time around Storybook Circus will be without one of the area's primary merchandise locations.

The situation looks slightly different elsewhere in Magic Kingdom, where guests can still experience another longtime attraction despite major changes to its normal operation.

Walt Disney World Railroad Remains on a Modified Route

The Walt Disney World Railroad is still running, but its traditional experience isn't currently available.

Construction around Frontierland has affected the railroad since 2025, resulting in modified operations while Disney continues major work in that section of Magic Kingdom.

Disney hasn't announced a date for the railroad to return to its previous route.

That means guests can still board the attraction during an August visit, but the journey won't match what longtime visitors may remember from before construction began.

With major projects continuing around Magic Kingdom, it's unclear how long those modified operations will remain necessary.

The final closure on the list takes guests outside the theme parks.

Lake Buena Vista Golf Course Remains Unavailable

Guests hoping to spend part of their vacation on the golf course also need to adjust their plans.

Disney's Lake Buena Vista Golf Course closed on May 4, 2026, for a refurbishment that has continued throughout the summer.

The course remains closed this August, giving golfers one fewer option during their Walt Disney World stay.

Disney expects Lake Buena Vista Golf Course to reopen sometime in fall 2026. However, no exact reopening date has been announced.

Guests planning a golf outing later this year should check the course's status as their vacation approaches.

Disney World Guests Should Check Their Plans

None of these projects will affect every vacation equally.

Guests primarily interested in Disney World's biggest rides may find that their plans remain mostly intact. However, returning visitors who make Carousel of Progress, the railroad, or other familiar locations part of every trip will notice the differences.

The closures also show how much work Disney currently has underway throughout the resort.

Several experiences should return before 2026 ends. Carousel of Progress faces a longer timeline, with Disney targeting a reopening sometime in 2027. Meanwhile, the Walt Disney World Railroad remains operational despite its modified route.

For guests traveling this August, checking what's open before heading out each day can make planning easier and help avoid unexpected changes once they arrive.
