Hersheypark Under Fire After ‘Tasteless’ Dig at Dollywood Hours After Dolly Parton’s Death

The internet was already mourning Dolly Parton when a theme park social media post suddenly became part of the conversation.

Parton died at 80, leaving behind one of the biggest legacies in entertainment, including the Tennessee theme park she helped build into Dollywood. Fans immediately began sharing memories, music, photos, and stories about the country icon.

Then, amid all of that, Hersheypark's official X account appeared to jump into a conversation about Dollywood ticket prices.

The response was short.

“Our summer tickets are $49.99.”

It was also enough to set off a wave of criticism.

Hersheypark has since apologized and explained that the response was not intended to be a comment about Parton's death. According to the Pennsylvania park, its social media team was responding to another portion of the conversation and did not see the context surrounding the original post.

Still, the timing quickly became the story.

Fans Were Talking About Dollywood When Hersheypark Jumped In

The exchange started with a fan praising Dollywood's ticket prices.

Following the news of Parton's death, an X user posted a screenshot of Dollywood's ticket calendar and praised the park for keeping admission prices “reasonable in this economy.”

The screenshot showed prices around $99.99.

That post was met with a response from Hersheypark's official account.

“Our summer tickets are $49.99,” the park replied.

It might have been an ordinary admission-price comparison on another day.

This wasn't another day.

Parton's death had just been announced, and Dollywood was actively mourning the woman whose name and identity are so closely tied to the park.

The response therefore struck some people as a strange attempt to promote Hersheypark pricing in the middle of a conversation about Parton's legacy.

chaos & CONtrol 🎃 (@TheConnorWeb) shared the initial photo of the message on social media on X: “HERSHEY PARK, NOOOOOOOOOOOO”.

Hersheypark replied, “We sincerely apologize for this error. A reply clarifying our ticket price in another conversation was posted without seeing the context of this chain so we removed quickly to avoid any confusion or insensitivity over intent.”

The Reaction Was Fast

Users quickly called out the response.

One person demanded to know whether Hersheypark would offer an “official apology” for what they described as a “TACTLESS post.”

Another called the exchange “such a big yikes.”

The criticism spread enough that Hersheypark removed the response and began explaining what had happened.

The park said it understood why people were concerned, but insisted that the reply had been made in response to another part of the conversation.

Hersheypark explained that a response clarifying its own ticket price had been posted without seeing the full context of the thread.

It was removed “quickly to avoid any confusion or insensitivity over intent.”

The park added:

“We absolutely apologize for the error.”

Hersheypark Shows the Conversation It Meant to Answer

Hersheypark wasn't finished explaining itself.

The account later shared a screenshot of another message it said was part of the conversation it had been responding to.

That message was specifically about Hersheypark's admission cost.

The user said that a $100 Hersheypark ticket was comparable to what the park charged years ago and argued that the price was reasonable for a one-day amusement park visit in 2026.

That was apparently the conversation Hersheypark's social media team had in mind when it posted the $49.99 response.

The park again emphasized that the reply wasn't intended to comment on Parton's death.

It also issued another apology.

“We sincerely apologize for this error,” Hersheypark said.

Meanwhile, Dollywood Was Saying Goodbye

The controversy happened as Dollywood was releasing its own statement about Parton's death.

The park called her its “beloved Dreamer-in-Chief.”

That wasn't just a sentimental nickname.

Parton helped shape Dollywood into what it is today, and her influence can be felt throughout the destination.

Dollywood said Parton's wish was for the park to remain a place of “joy, hope and togetherness.”

The statement also said that she wanted families to honor her through “laughter, music and shared dreams.”

And despite the loss, the park confirmed it would keep operating.

“In her spirit, Dollywood will be open Wednesday as Dolly wanted,” the statement said.

The park then echoed a phrase that has followed Parton throughout her career:

“The show must go on.”

Dolly Was More Than a Name on the Entrance

For fans, this is what makes Dollywood's response so important.

Parton wasn't simply a celebrity whose name was licensed to a theme park.

She became involved with the destination in 1986, taking a partial ownership stake and helping transform the attraction into a major destination in the Smoky Mountains.

The park's story is intertwined with her own.

Her childhood is represented throughout the property. Her music plays a central role in the experience. Exhibits celebrate her career, family, fashion, and philanthropy.

The Dolly Parton Experience gives guests an even closer look at the woman behind the music.

That makes Dollywood one of the rare theme parks where visitors are essentially stepping into the life story of a real person.

Parton Had Already Stepped Back From Some Park Events

Parton's health had affected her involvement with Dollywood before her death.

Earlier this month, she was expected to attend the opening celebration for NightFlight Expedition, one of the park's newest major attractions.

Instead, she appeared through a prerecorded video.

Parton had previously explained that health problems had made travel difficult.

NightFlight Expedition opened to the public on August 19, meaning one of the park's biggest recent additions launched without Parton physically there to celebrate it.

For longtime Dollywood fans, that absence was significant.

Parton had traditionally been much more hands-on with the park than most celebrity names associated with entertainment destinations.

So, What Happens to Dollywood?

There is no indication that Dollywood is going anywhere.

The park has already made its position clear.

It will remain open, and it intends to continue following the vision Parton established.

That could make the destination an even more meaningful stop for travelers.

Someone planning a Disney World or Universal Orlando vacation may know Dollywood primarily as another major theme park destination. But the experience is fundamentally different.

Disney World is built around beloved fictional characters and worlds.

Universal Orlando is built around major movies, television properties, and franchises.

Dollywood is built around the life and legacy of Dolly Parton.

That distinction could become even more powerful now.

For fans who visit in the coming months and years, attractions such as the Dolly Parton Experience may feel less like a collection of exhibits and more like a tribute.

The Internet Has a Long Memory

Hersheypark's social media controversy will probably fade much faster than Dolly Parton's legacy.

The park has apologized, removed the original response, and provided context for what its account was attempting to say.

There is no indication from the information available that Hersheypark intentionally tried to disrespect Parton.

But the incident is a reminder that timing matters, especially when a social media account responds to a conversation involving a major breaking-news event.

Dolly Parton's death created an emotional moment for theme park fans everywhere.

Dollywood responded by promising that her park would continue to be a place of happiness and community.

Hersheypark, unintentionally, became part of that conversation for an entirely different reason.

And while the controversy may disappear from timelines, Dollywood's connection to Parton isn't going anywhere.

If you've ever wanted to visit Dollywood, this may be one of those moments when the park feels worth experiencing for more than its rides. Dolly built a place around music, family, and the Smoky Mountains, and now guests are stepping into a legacy that belongs to her forever.
