Is Dick Van Dyke Still With Us? Star’s Grim Joke Sparks Concern Ahead of 100th Birthday

At a recent high tea event in Malibu, the legendary Dick Van Dyke delivered a moment that was as disarming as it was undeniably him. With his 100th birthday looming just two months away, the beloved entertainer cracked a joke only someone with his wit and timing could pull off.

“That’s right. I’m not officially 100 until December. Two months. Two months,” Van Dyke told attendees at the Vandy High Tea, pausing before deadpanning: “It’d be funny if I didn’t make it.”

The line, caught by PEOPLE, landed just as you’d expect—a mix of laughter and nervous chuckles from a room full of fans and supporters. Van Dyke, long known for bringing levity to life’s heaviest moments, wasn’t trying to be morbid—he was doing what he’s always done best: turning the human condition into a punchline.

But beneath the humor, there was reflection.

In a more earnest tone, the 99-year-old actor confessed, “I brag sometimes about how I made it to 100, and the truth is, if I had known I was going to live this long, I would’ve taken better care of myself. And it is frustrating because I don’t know what I did right. Other than her [wife Arlene], I didn’t do anything right.”

Van Dyke, married to Arlene Silver since 2012, was joined by her at the event, which aimed to raise funds for the Van Dyke Endowment of the Arts and the soon-to-be-opened Dick Van Dyke Museum. Though still sharp and smiling, the actor’s remarks highlight the complex emotions that come with nearing such a rare milestone—celebration tinged with vulnerability, pride mixed with disbelief.

A Life Both Public and Personal

Van Dyke’s appearance follows months of increasing concern from fans about his health. Earlier this year, he was forced to cancel a scheduled appearance at Vandy Camp, a fan event he was set to attend alongside Arlene. At the time, she took the stage solo and explained his absence.

“When you’re 99-and-a-half years old, you have good days and bad days, and when you’re 40 years old, you have good days and bad days,” she said. “Unfortunately, today is not a good day for him, and he’s sick that he can’t be here.”

Though Van Dyke did call in briefly to say hello, he hasn’t made many public appearances since—until this recent event.

Those closest to the entertainer have been honest about the toll age has taken on him. Earlier reports from RadarOnlinequoted sources close to Van Dyke saying the actor is “frailer” and doesn’t have the same stamina he once did. Though he was once known to frequent the gym and make spontaneous public appearances, those days appear to be slowing down.

“He’s slowing down. One day he’ll be feeling great and wanting to get out and see people, and the next, he’ll feel weak and out of sorts,” a source said. “Everybody desperately hopes he can make it to 100 and beyond, but there are fears he won’t.”

A Century of Joy, with a Dash of Realism

Last year, CBS aired a primetime special, Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic, which celebrated the actor’s enormous contribution to the world of entertainment—from his breakout on The Dick Van Dyke Show to his unforgettable roles in Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Night at the Museum.

Speaking with Variety at the time, Van Dyke summed up his career with trademark humility: “I enjoyed everything I did, and not a lot of people can say that.”

He went on to describe the effect he hopes his legacy has left behind: “I left a good example for a young generation… I think I have a positive effect on kids. And I can tell by the mail I get from kids that I’ve had a good effect. They want to emulate that behavior. And that, I think, is why what we really accomplish is worthwhile.”

That legacy is not limited to the screen. In recent years, Van Dyke has used his platform to promote causes close to his heart, including homelessness in Los Angeles and arts education for children. His charisma and kindness have remained unwavering, whether dancing with his wife on social media or performing impromptu songs for fans.

Facing the Unknown With Grace — and a Punchline

Now, as he approaches his centennial birthday on December 13, Van Dyke seems both ready and relaxed. He’s not clinging to youth or avoiding tough conversations. Instead, he’s meeting the moment with the same grace, warmth, and comedic intuition that’s defined his career.

There’s no big farewell tour, no overly sentimental tributes. Just a sharp joke delivered with impeccable timing and a rare glimpse into the mind of a man who has lived almost an entire century — and still manages to leave a room laughing.

And maybe that’s what makes Dick Van Dyke’s reflection so profound. It’s not that he doesn’t care about hitting 100. It’s that he’s already done the thing that really matters — making people feel good for the better part of a century. Whether or not he gets to blow out those 100 candles, he’s already left behind a legacy that doesn’t need cake to be celebrated.

That said… let’s hope he does make it. Because if anyone deserves a party, it’s Dick Van Dyke.
