Disney Axes Plans for Jack Sparrow, Character Removed From Public

Captain Jack Sparrow won't be setting sail on Disney's newest cruise ship…at least not anytime soon.

Disney Adventure, the latest and largest vessel in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, made headlines before it ever left port. Disney acquired the ship after its original owner went bankrupt, leaving it nearly finished and sitting in a German warehouse. The Mouse reimagined it from the ground up, eyeing expansion into the Asian market — the ship will launch its maiden three-and four-night voyages from Singapore this year.

The Disney Adventure arrives loaded with entertainment tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Disney, Pixar, Duffy and Friends, and more. But one promised offering never made it to opening night.

Theme park and travel journalist Scott Gustin (@ScottGustin), who is aboard a press voyage of the Disney Adventure, broke the news on Sunday, March 8:

‘Captain Jack Sparrow & The Siren Queen' is no longer part of the entertainment lineup on the Disney Adventure. And at this time, there are no plans to offer the show on the ship in the future.

The show had been slated for the Disney Imagination Garden, the ship's open-air internal courtyard. The premise followed the mischievous pirate and his crew hunting for treasure while tangling with mermaids and giant squids — the kind of swashbuckling spectacle that seemed tailor-made for the venue. Of course, the character would not have been portrayed by Johnny Depp, who famously originated the role in the Pirates of the Caribbean film franchise.

Disney Cruise Line has offered no explanation for the cancellation. There is no timeline for the show's return, and guests booked on upcoming Disney Adventure sailings should plan accordingly.
