Jodi Benson’s career has been marked by her iconic performances in beloved Disney films. As the voice of Ariel in The Little Mermaid (1989) and Barbie in Pixar’s Toy Story series, she has left an indelible mark on the hearts of audiences worldwide. Unbeknownst to many, Benson’s talents extend beyond family-friendly roles; she recently revealed that she lent her voice to the character EVA in the critically acclaimed Konami video games “Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater” and “Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker.”
For the past two decades, the identity of the actress behind EVA has been shrouded in mystery, credited only as Suzetta Miñet. This pseudonym was an important choice for Benson, who, during an interview, revealed that she opted for anonymity due to the project’s contrasting nature compared to her usual work with Disney.
The voice acting director, Kris Zimmerman, suggested the pseudonym to protect her associations with family-oriented content. To create this alias, Zimmerman playfully changed the name of Benson’s childhood dog, resulting in the name Suzetta Miñet.
“Our director, she sat down with me and she’s was like, ‘Maybe we need to change your name,'” Benson recalled. “So she asked me, ‘What was your dog’s name growing up?’ and I said, ‘Suzette Monet.’ So she’s like, ‘You know what? Let’s build on that. How about Suzetta?’ How about instead of Monet, like the artist, we’ll do Miñet?’ and I was like, ‘Sounds like a deal.'”
Konami and its employees kept Benson‘s identity secret for nearly two decades. However, the Disney Princess actress said a “wonderful fan” recognized her voice and approached her to sign a copy of “Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater” at a fan convention seven years ago.
“I said, ‘Why are you bringing me that?'” Benson explained. “And he says, ‘Because you’re in it.’ And I said, ‘Do you know? Do you know my deep, dark secret?’ and he said, ‘Yes!’ I said, ‘Shh… keep it quiet.'”
