Journey Into Imagination With Figment remained shuttered at EPCOT on Friday morning following an unexpected closure. One Walt Disney World Resort guest shared backstage photographs from inside the World Celebration attraction after becoming stuck inside their ride vehicle.
Breakdown at EPCOT

Reddit user u/Ptucker212 posted two behind-the-scenes images on Friday morning after Journey Into Imagination With Figment malfunctioned mid-ride. The Disney Park guest reported becoming “trapped” near the attraction's final scene. “I can see the exit door,” they wrote.

The photographs reveal a track junction where malfunctioning or decommissioned ride vehicles transfer backstage for maintenance or storage. Both images demonstrate the critical role of lighting in Disney Park attractions—the beloved purple dragon animatronics and decorative elements appear surrounded by plain black curtains, walls, and flooring when the house lights activate.
Journey Into Imagination With Figment Closure Continues
Two hours after the Reddit user posted photos of the Journey Into Imagination With Figment interior, the EPCOT dark ride remained closed. The My Disney Experience app displayed “temporarily closed” status for the World Celebration attraction.

Walt Disney World Resort executives sometimes send push notifications to guests within the four Central Florida theme parks apologizing for prolonged ride closures. No such notification has appeared for this situation, potentially indicating Disney anticipates reopening before EPCOT closes on Friday evening.
The cause of Journey Into Imagination With Figment's January 2 shutdown remains unspecified.
Attraction's Turbulent History
Journey Into Imagination With Figment has weathered significant controversy throughout its existence. The original “Journey Into Imagination,” featuring the purple dragon, debuted at EPCOT during the early 1980s and became an immediate success. Figment and DreamFinder once appeared as popular walk-around characters at the second Central Florida Disney park.

Walt Disney World Resort introduced “Journey Into YOUR Imagination” in 1999, eliminating Figment from the Imagination Pavilion attraction entirely. Guest backlash proved so severe that Walt Disney Imagineering launched the current “Journey Into Imagination With Figment” in 2002, restoring the purple dragon to the experience.
Despite Figment's return, most Disney Parks enthusiasts consider the current Journey Into Imagination inferior to the original EPCOT attraction.
