In the fall of 2024, Marvel fans found themselves entranced by Agatha All Along, the spinoff that brought Kathryn Hahn’s Agatha Harkness from a memorable supporting role in WandaVision to center stage.
Introduced as the quirky neighbor Agnes in WandaVision, Agatha’s true identity as a cunning, powerful witch became the series’ showstopper. The finale left her trapped in Westview, powerless and inconspicuous. Fast-forward to Agatha All Along, and audiences got a front-row seat to her origins and her quest to reclaim her former glory. The series featured an electrifying cast, including theater legend Patti LuPone as Lilia Calderu and Joe Locke as William Kaplan/Billy Maximoff.
Unsurprisingly, the show cast a potent spell, becoming the most-watched Disney+ series during its debut week. According to Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ Head of Streaming, Television, and Animation, it boasted the highest audience retention rate of any Marvel Cinematic Universe project to date. The series’ clever use of practical effects, rather than CGI, gave it a distinct edge and made it Marvel’s most budget-friendly show.
Despite this success, Agatha All Along, created by WandaVision mastermind Jac Schaeffer, will not see a second season. However, hope flickers on the horizon: Agatha is set to return in What If…? Season 3, but is this truly the last we’ll see of Kathryn Hahn as Agatha Harkness?
In a candid interview with the Los Angeles Times, Hahn reflected on her transformative experience. “Even though obviously now Billy/Wiccan is not her son, there is some sort of hope for her that she’s able to maybe do for him what she couldn’t do for Nicky,” Hahn shared, alluding to Agatha’s deeply emotional character arc. “I think they do make a great team.”
But for Hahn, it seems the time has come to bid farewell to Agatha Harkness. “In my mind, this was a beautiful and satisfying way to say goodbye to this incredible character I had to play,” she said. Hahn expressed her gratitude for the rare intimacy of Agatha All Along’s finale, describing it as “small and tender” rather than the loud, climactic endings typical of Marvel Studios.
So, what’s next for Agatha Harkness? The witch is confirmed to appear in What If…? Season 3, slated to premiere on December 22, 2024. Known for its imaginative reimaginings of the MCU, What If…? will seemingly feature a musical-themed episode pairing Agatha with Kingo from Eternals (played by Kumail Nanjiani). Though Hahn initially claimed to know nothing of her inclusion in the series, the trailer confirms her return as the voice behind the witch.
This won’t be the only familiar face in What If…? Season 3. The anthology series continues to bring fan-favorite characters to life in alternate realities, such as Captain Carter (Hayley Atwell), Shang-Chi (Simu Liu), and Captain America (Anthony Mackie). While Robert Downey Jr. won’t voice the Doctor Doom role, another actor will, the show will see other iconic actors stepping back into their MCU personas for its third and final season.
As the curtain closes on Agatha’s solo adventures, one can only wonder how her story will evolve within the expansive Multiverse. Fans can now stream all episodes of Agatha All Along on Disney+, where Hahn’s mesmerizing portrayal continues to cast its spell on Marvel enthusiasts.
