The construction footprint of Piston Peak National Park is expanding again at Magic Kingdom Park, and Walt Disney World Resort guests navigating Frontierland on June 2 were the first to discover how much more of the area is now behind walls.
The Boardwalk Goes Behind Plywood

Multiple Disney Park guests reported on June 2 that a section of the boardwalk connecting Liberty Square to Frontierland at Magic Kingdom Park had been surrounded by plywood construction walls. WDWNT shared this photo of guests navigating the newly tightened pathways.
@Blog_Mickey also documented the closure on X (formerly known as Twitter):
The first portion of the Frontierland boardwalk has closed to guests. New pavement in the area also removes the officially unofficial “Little Mississippi”

The walls themselves offer a few visual clues about what's happening behind them. A newly repaved red section of walkway is visible where the barriers begin, and the construction walls are accented with wooden fence details and rolling planters. One casualty of the closure is the small water feature that guests had long referred to informally as “Little Mississippi,” which is now covered and gone.

Current construction activity in the area appears focused on building a retaining wall that will partially surround Piston Peak National Park as it takes shape in the former Frontierland and Liberty Square footprint.
How Frontierland Got Here

The latest boardwalk closure is just the most recent chapter in the most sweeping overhaul Frontierland has ever seen at Magic Kingdom Park. The transformation dates back to D23 2024, when Walt Disney World Resort announced that a Cars (2006)-inspired area called Piston Peak National Park would open in Frontierland. The Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat all closed permanently last year to clear the way for construction, which has been progressing steadily ever since.
When it opens, Piston Peak National Park will draw visual inspiration from America's national park landscapes and introduce two brand-new attractions to the Magic Kingdom: a rally race thrill ride and a family-friendly experience centered on a new character named Ranger J. Autobahn Woodlore. Both will be distinct from the rides currently operating in Cars Land at Disney California Adventure Park.

No opening date has been announced for Piston Peak National Park.
