Mickey Mouse Meet-And-Greet Gets a Makeover at Magic Kingdom

Refurbishment work has begun on the Town Square Theatre at Magic Kingdom Park, the building housing the Magician Mickey Mouse meet-and-greet and Tony's Town Square Restaurant.

WDWNT reported on February 18 that scrim was installed over a small window at the top of the roof, where tile panels have been missing for years. Disney cast members also installed white scrim on the right-side porch railing, indicating plans to repaint or refurbish that area.

The missing roof tiles visible in photos have been that way for years. The current work may be Disney finally addressing deferred upkeep on the Main Street, U.S.A., structure.

The changes suggest cosmetic maintenance rather than major renovation. Whether additional scrim will cover more of the building in the coming days remains unclear.

Town Square Theatre sits immediately to the right when guests enter Magic Kingdom Park. Besides the Mickey Mouse meet-and-greet, it houses a gift shop, restrooms, and the waiting area for Tony's Town Square Restaurant next door.

Disney announced at D23 Expo 2017 that a new Main Street Theatre would replace the Town Square Theatre, bringing Broadway-style entertainment to the Magic Kingdom. The building, inspired by Kansas City's Willis Wood Theatre, had groundbreaking begin after the announcement but was quietly canceled in 2018 and never mentioned again following the COVID-19 pandemic.

While Walt Disney World Resort appears to have abandoned plans for an extensive overhaul, the current work addresses visible deterioration on the building's exterior.

Walt Disney World Resort has not publicly announced the refurbishment project. The Mickey Mouse meet-and-greet, Tony's Town Square Restaurant, and all other building operations continue without disruption.
