Disney pulled a free transportation option from two of its most expensive EPCOT-area resorts last week. It is back now, five days later, and the timing could not be better.
Some context.
Look, a few days ago we covered a transportation perk disappearing at two of Walt Disney World's most popular hotels. Time for the follow-up, and this one actually goes the right direction.
Free transportation is one of the biggest arguments for staying on property. Every Disney hotel gets buses to the parks and Disney Springs, but a handful get something better. Monorail. Skyliner. Boats.
The EPCOT Resort area sits at the very top of that ladder, and people pay a premium specifically for it. Walking or boating to two theme parks destroys waiting on a bus, and that absolutely factors into where guests book.
So when a chunk of that network goes dark, everybody notices.
Last week it went dark. Now it is running.
The Disney Boats Are Back
FriendShip boat service has returned at Disney's Yacht Club Resort and Disney's Beach Club Resort.
The shared dock shut down August 17 for maintenance, with Disney aiming to reopen August 21. Disney hit the date. Guests can board from the Yacht and Beach dock again.
Five days down. About as short as a Disney World transportation closure ever gets.
Where They Take You
Quick refresher on the route.
FriendShip boats from Yacht Club and Beach Club hit:
- EPCOT
- Disney's Hollywood Studios
- Disney's BoardWalk
- The Swan and Dolphin hotels
Two theme parks and three neighboring resorts, from a dock basically outside your door, completely free.
One of the best transportation perks on the entire property, and a huge reason the EPCOT Resort area gets away with its rates.
What People Dealt With
Disney did not abandon anybody, which is the standard move when a specialty option goes down.
Direct bus transportation to Disney's Hollywood Studios ran from both the Yacht Club and Beach Club bus stops. Cleanest possible substitute for the hardest destination to walk to.
For EPCOT, most people just hoofed it. Yacht Club and Beach Club sit within walking distance of EPCOT's International Gateway entrance, about 10 to 15 minutes.
Disney's BoardWalk and the Swan and Dolphin hotels stayed walkable too, using the EPCOT Resort area pathways.
Why It Was Still Rough
Short closure with alternatives, so no big deal? Not so fast.
A 10 to 15 minute walk hits completely differently depending on who is doing it. Families with toddlers. Anybody pushing a stroller. People dragging back to the room after eight hours in a park.
And this landed smack in the middle of August, during a run of Central Florida heat advisories with the index shoving past 110. A walk that is delightful in November is an entirely different animal in that weather.
Hollywood Studios options worked, but slower. The direct bus was the obvious call. You could also walk to Disney's BoardWalk and grab a FriendShip there, or take a brutally long Skyliner route through Disney's Riviera Resort and Disney's Caribbean Beach Resort before transferring.
That last option exists. Nobody chose it.
Nobody Was Losing This Forever
Worth stating outright, since perk-removal headlines always sound worse than reality.
Disney never said FriendShip service was being permanently yanked from either resort. Scheduled dock maintenance. Published end date. Delivered on schedule.
That difference matters when you read Disney World transportation news. Maintenance closures and permanent cuts look identical in a headline and are completely different animals.
Construction Is Not Done Around There
The dock closure overlapped with a pile of other resort work.
Projects continue at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge, Disney's BoardWalk Inn, and Disney's Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground.
BoardWalk matters most for this neighborhood. The Village Green closed August 10 through September 4, with additional lobby corridor closures scheduled into November.
Boats are back, sure. Still check what is actually open at your specific hotel before you show up.
Why the Timing Is Perfect
Boats running normally. No follow-up closure announced.
Got a Yacht Club or Beach Club stay coming? Full transportation package intact. Boats to two parks, walking access to EPCOT, buses for everything else.
That combo is exactly why these places sell out, especially during EPCOT festival season.
And the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival opens August 27. Getting from your room to World Showcase without ever touching a bus is the entire reason people book these hotels.
