The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025) reignited the MCU’s cosmic side when it hit theaters in late July 2025. The long-anticipated reboot reintroduced Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm through a bold, retro-futuristic lens that mixed nostalgia with innovation. This time, the heroes face one of Marvel’s most towering threats–the world-devouring Galactus (Ralph Ineson) and his mysterious Herald, the Shalla-Bal (Julia Garner).

The ensemble cast, led by Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mister Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing, brought fresh energy and emotional nuance to the beloved team. Director Matt Shakman embraced the style and imagination of 1960s Marvel Comics, creating a film that’s as heartfelt as it is spectacular. Beneath its cosmic conflicts lies a personal story about love, loyalty, and what it means to stand together when the universe itself is on the line.

The film arrived at a crucial moment for the MCU following the quieter performances of Captain America: Brave New World (2025) and Thunderbolts* (2025). The Fantastic Four: First Steps opened strong with $118 million domestically and nearly $100 million internationally, achieving a worldwide total near $218 million.

Critics were quick to praise its visual style, tight performances, and sense of adventure. The production design and color palette, influenced by atomic-age aesthetics, helped establish a tone that felt refreshingly different from recent Marvel releases.

Despite its impressive launch, the film’s second weekend saw a noticeable drop, tempering some of its early box office momentum. Still, it went on to surpass the half-billion-dollar mark globally, reaffirming the Fantastic Four’s relevance in the modern MCU landscape. Even if it didn’t match the highest-earning Marvel hits, it succeeded in reestablishing the team’s cinematic presence and setting up their next major story.

Disney has now confirmed that The Fantastic Four: First Steps will begin streaming on Disney+ on November 5, complete with an IMAX-enhanced version. As with each new Marvel release, its Disney+ debut will once again shift the official MCU timeline, updating the chronological viewing order for fans following every story beat from the Multiverse saga.

The Fantastic Four will return next year in Avengers: Doomsday (2026).

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
