Marvel's next era is beginning to take shape, and a few familiar cosmic heroes are coming along for the ride.
Even though the Guardians of the Galaxy haven't shared the screen in years, recent developments have confirmed that Rocket, Groot, and Star-Lord still have futures connected to Marvel. The franchise may have moved beyond its original team, but it hasn't closed the door on some of its most popular characters.
The Guardians Didn't End With Vol. 3
Before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (2023) arrived, many fans braced themselves for heartbreaking losses.
James Gunn's final Marvel film certainly delivered emotional moments, but it didn't wipe out the team. Instead, the story focused on giving its heroes meaningful new directions.
Peter Quill returned home to Earth. Drax and Nebula remained on Knowhere, helping its residents build a community. Mantis set off on her own adventure, while Gamora continued life alongside the Ravagers.
Rocket Raccoon experienced perhaps the biggest change of all. By the film's conclusion, he had become the leader of a brand-new Guardians roster, setting up potential stories for years to come.

Rocket and Groot Make Their Return
While live-action plans remain under wraps, Marvel has already found a way to bring Rocket and Groot back.
The characters recently appeared in animated shorts connected to Meet Spidey and His Amazing Friends, helping introduce them to a younger generation of viewers.
That return is only the beginning. Rocket and Groot will soon join Peter Parker, Miles Morales, and Gwen Stacy during the show's “Rescue-Webs” storyline. Season 5 is set to debut on July 13.
These kid-friendly versions differ from the MCU heroes audiences know from the films, but they still demonstrate Marvel's continued interest in keeping the characters visible.
For younger viewers discovering Marvel through Disney Jr., Rocket and Groot could become favorites all over again.

Marvel Left One Big Promise Behind
While Rocket and Groot already have confirmed appearances ahead, Star-Lord remains surrounded by mystery.
Marvel ended Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 with a simple message that immediately grabbed fans' attention: “The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return.”
That tease suggested Peter Quill's journey was far from complete. However, Marvel has remained silent about where that return will actually happen.
The lack of updates has only increased fan curiosity over the years.
Star-Lord Hasn't Been Forgotten
As Marvel's focus shifted toward multiversal threats and new heroes, some fans began to question whether Star-Lord still fit into the studio's long-term plans.
Recent comments from Chris Pratt helped ease some of those concerns.
Pratt indicated that Star-Lord's return remains expected, reinforcing the idea that Marvel still intends to follow through on the promise made at the end of the third Guardians film.
Exactly when that happens remains unknown, but the character continues to occupy an interesting place within the MCU's future.

A Cosmic Future May Still Be Waiting
Marvel's cosmic stories could become increasingly important after Avengers: Secret Wars (2027).
If that happens, Rocket's new Guardians team may finally get an opportunity to return to center stage. A direct fourth Guardians movie appears unlikely without James Gunn, but Marvel has countless ways to revisit these characters.
The studio is also preparing for the X-Men's arrival, creating an even larger roster of heroes to work with. Even so, Rocket, Groot, and Star-Lord continue to stand out as some of Marvel's most recognizable cosmic figures.
The original Guardians team may have gone their separate ways, but Marvel has made one thing clear: these three heroes still have a role to play in whatever comes next.
