MCU X-Men Confirmed, Will Lead MCU Reset Starting May 2028

Marvel Studios' D23 presentation offered the clearest evidence yet that the company's long-rumored franchise reset is now in active execution, with the studio using the showcase to formalize its transition from an Avengers-driven era to one built around the X-Men property.

The announcement lands at a pivotal moment for the studio, ahead of two of its largest scheduled releases: Avengers: Doomsday (2026), which introduces Robert Downey Jr. in the role of Doctor Doom, and Avengers: Secret Wars (2027), a two-part event directed by Anthony and Joe Russo.

The Russo brothers previously oversaw Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), and their return signals the studio's intent to treat Secret Wars as a narrative hinge point spanning generations of Marvel storytelling, from Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) to legacy X-Men figures such as Cyclops (James Marsden) and Professor X (Patrick Stewart).

From “Reset” Rhetoric to Production Reality

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige laid the groundwork for this shift more than a year ago. Speaking to Variety in 2025 ahead of Matt Shakman's The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025), Feige distinguished the studio's plans from a traditional reboot. “Reboot is a scary word,” he said. “Reboot can mean a lot of things to a lot of people. Reset, singular timeline — we're thinking along those lines.” He added directly, “‘X-Men' is where that will happen next.”

That statement has now crystallized into a confirmed May 2028 release date, positioned roughly a year before the MCU marks its 20th anniversary since the debut of Jon Favreau's Iron Man in 2008. On stage, Feige was joined by X-Men director Jake Schreier — fresh off directing last year's Thunderbolts* (2025) — and Sadie Sink, whose MCU debut came via her antagonist role in Destin Daniel Cretton's Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026).

Box Office Momentum Fuels Franchise Confidence

Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which pits Tom Holland's Peter Parker against Sink's Jean Grey, has continued climbing toward a $2 billion global box office total, reinforcing Marvel's confidence in expanding the mutant storyline the film left intentionally unresolved. Sink's formal casting as Jean Grey closes that narrative loop and cements her as a central figure heading into the studio's next chapter.

Joining Sink are two previously confirmed roles: Samara Weaving (Ready or Not) as Emma Frost and Kit Connor (Heartstopper) as Scott Summers/Cyclops. The D23 panel expanded the roster further, naming Christopher Abbott (Girls) as Professor Charles Xavier/Professor X, Inde Navarrette (Obsession) as Rogue, Maya Boyd (& Juliet) as Ororo Munroe/Storm, and Adam Driver (The Force Awakens) as Nathaniel Milbury/Mr. Sinister.

Driver's involvement drew particular attention, given persistent speculation linking him to Magneto. Appearing remotely from Pinewood Studios, Driver addressed the rumors directly: “When Kevin told me to show up for X-Men, I assumed he meant on set. So instead of being there in California, I'm here at Pinewood [Studios] on this very lonely soundstage,” he said, as reported by Marvel.com. He added, “Kevin and I have been talking for years about maybe joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And I think we finally found the perfect film at the perfect time. So I'm very excited to be playing Mag…. Nope. Even better. Nathaniel Milbury. So I'll be right here, waiting for everybody to show up.”

A Calculated Franchise Transition

Feige's comments to Variety in 2025 offer insight into the thematic direction guiding the pivot. “They have been a place to tell stories about young people who feel different and who feel Other and who feel like they don't belong,” he said. “That's the universal story of mutants, and that is where we're going.”

While no member of the newly announced cast — including Sink — has been officially tied to Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars, the studio's apparent effort to streamline its release slate has fueled speculation that some crossover, whether through a full appearance or a post-credits tease in Secret Wars, remains plausible. For a franchise navigating both the tail end of its Multiverse Saga and renewed commercial momentum from Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the X-Men announcement signals Marvel's clearest articulation yet of what its next decade of storytelling will look like.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
