Just days before the highly anticipated release of Moana 2 (2024), Walt Disney World Resort has made a notable change to the representation of the beloved Polynesian Princess at EPCOT. This update ties into the excitement surrounding the sequel, set to premiere this Thanksgiving.
Moana (2016) ‘s Expanding Legacy
Since her debut in 2016, Moana has become one of Disney’s most celebrated characters, inspiring a wave of content across various platforms. Originally planned as a Disney+ series, Moana 2 was upgraded to a feature film after Walt Disney Animation Studios saw the story’s potential. The sequel brings back Auliʻi Cravalho (Moana) and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Maui), though Lin-Manuel Miranda did not return to help compose the soundtrack.
In addition to the animated sequel, Disney is also developing a live-action remake of Moana (2016), with Johnson reprising his role as Maui and Catherine Laga’aia stepping into the titular Disney Princess role.
Meanwhile, Walt Disney World Resort has kept the Moana momentum alive with the 2023 introduction of the Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana attraction at EPCOT. The immersive walkthrough is a family-friendly and interactive addition to the World Nature neighborhood.
Moana’s EPCOT Update
To celebrate the upcoming film premiere, EPCOT has introduced an all-new version of Moana near the Journey of Water attraction. Disney Park guests can meet the Polynesian Disney Princess in an all-new, sequel-inspired outfit at her designated location across the walkway from Journey of Water, adjacent to the Coral Reef Restaurant.
