‘Monsters, Inc.’ Suspended Door Coaster Comes To Life at Disney World’s Hollywood Studios

Construction on Monstropolis continues at a steady pace at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and new aerial footage gives fans a clear look at how far the Monsters, Inc. expansion has come ahead of its 2027 debut.

The new land replaces the former Grand Avenue area and will recreate the city from Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. franchise. Walt Disney World isn’t building around a single ride. It’s planning a full district with multiple locations drawn from the films, giving guests room to wander the streets that Mike Wazowski, James P. Sullivan, and the rest of the monster workforce call home.

The centerpiece is a roller coaster based on the famous door vault chase, when Mike and Sulley ride through the factory’s massive warehouse of doors. It is expected to be the first suspended roller coaster Disney has ever built, so the ride vehicles will hang beneath the track rather than sit on top of it. Work on the large show building that will hold the attraction has been moving along, and the ride is expected to be one of the park’s biggest draws once complete.

Aerial photographer Bioreconstruct shared fresh footage of the site on X, writing:

“Aerial video of construction of the Monsters Inc suspended door roller coaster, and Monstropolis. With a look at track staged near EPCOT.”

A follow-up post offered a closer view of the coaster building:

Guests shouldn’t count on riding the coaster on day one, however. Disney has laid out a phased opening plan for Monstropolis, with several experiences arriving in 2027 while construction on the coaster continues.

One of those early offerings is the Glob Theater, home to a show called Welcome to Monstropolis. Concept art released for the venue shows a monster-styled facade, a theatrical lobby, and plenty of jokes for eagle-eyed fans. These include parody movie posters and quirky decor meant to make the theater feel like a working part of the city.

Dining is also part of the plan. Disney has confirmed that Harryhausen’s, the sushi restaurant from the original film, will be built inside the land. Throughout the area, laugh canisters and other set pieces will reflect the later chapter of the story, in which Monstropolis runs on laughter instead of screams.

The latest aerial images show the project moving beyond the concept art stage, and more updates are expected as the 2027 opening approaches. With recognizable locations, character nods, and a first-of-its-kind coaster, Monstropolis is shaping up as a major new chapter for Hollywood Studios.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
