When you think of Disney World, the first things that come to mind are magic, fireworks, and fairy tales come to life. But behind the scenes, a finely-tuned set of rules keeps the experience running smoothly. Some are expected—like no smoking in the middle of a ride queue—but others? Well, they might surprise you.
If you’re heading to the parks anytime soon, make sure these five lesser-known rules are on your radar.
1. Selfie Sticks? Big No-No
Once popular for capturing that perfect castle shot, selfie sticks are now banned throughout Disney World. The parks consider them a safety risk, especially on rides and in crowded areas. You’ll be asked to leave them behind or check them before entering.
The good news? Thanks to their PhotoPass system and Cast Member photographers scattered all over the parks, Disney offers plenty of photo opportunities.

2. No Straws. No Balloons.
Animal Kingdom is a bit of a different beast (pun intended). Because the park is home to live animals, Disney enforces strict environmental rules, most notably, no balloons or plastic straws. These items can pose serious threats to the animals, so even if you bring one from another park, it won’t make it through the Animal Kingdom gate.
Instead, you’ll find paper straws and eco-friendly alternatives throughout the park.

3. Adults Can’t Wear Costumes—Most of the Time
Kids in costumes are a common sight in Disney World, but adults over the age of 14? Not so much. Disney has a clear rule against grown-ups dressing in full character attire during regular park hours. The reason is simple: they don’t want guests to mistake regular visitors for Cast Members.
There’s an exception during special ticketed events like Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, where costumes are allowed (with restrictions). So if you’ve been planning to channel your inner Elsa or Captain Jack Sparrow, just make sure it’s on an approved day.

4. What You Wear Matters
Disney wants every guest to feel comfortable and safe in the parks, which means your outfit can’t be offensive, inappropriate, or overly revealing. That includes shirts with explicit images or language and anything Disney deems too suggestive. If you’re flagged at the entrance, security may ask you to change, and in some cases, you could be denied entry altogether.
It’s rare, but it does happen. To avoid issues, stick to clothing you’d be okay wearing around kids at a family reunion.

5. You Could Be Banned for Life
Yes, Disney can—and has—issued lifetime bans to guests who seriously break the rules. That includes everything from sneaking into the park without a valid ticket to harassing Cast Members or jumping off a moving ride. Even if you aren’t arrested, you can be permanently denied entry to any Disney park.
They’ve got facial recognition and digital tracking, so good luck sneaking back in once you’re banned.
Don’t Let a Rule Ruin the Magic
Disney World may be the happiest place on earth, but that happiness comes with structure. These rules are in place to protect guests, Cast Members, and the magic that makes Disney special. Know the rules, follow them, and you’ll have a trip full of memories, not mishaps.
