NEW: Disney World Vacation Cancellations Advised Ahead of Hurricane Milton

As Hurricane Milton barrels toward Florida, Disney World has issued a crucial update for guests planning to visit the parks this week.

In anticipation of potential disruptions caused by the storm, Disney is waiving all change and cancellation fees for hotel stays booked for October 6-12, 2024. This policy allows guests with upcoming vacations to modify their plans without worrying about penalties, as long as their reservations were made directly through Disney Destinations, LLC or The Walt Disney Travel Company.

Guests can modify most room-only and vacation package reservations online, including changes to travel dates or cancellations. However, if a vacation includes air transportation or services provided by third-party suppliers, such as car rentals or travel insurance, guests will need to contact Disney directly for assistance.

While Disney is being flexible, certain experiences like special events or pre-paid dining reservations may not be covered under the waiver, according to the policy update.

Currently, Disney World is still operating normally, but the resort has issued a statement indicating that they are closely monitoring Hurricane Milton’s trajectory.

“Walt Disney World Resort is currently operating under normal conditions. We are closely monitoring the path of the projected storm as we continue to prioritize the safety of our Guests and Cast Members.”

However, Disney has already suspended new park reservations for October 9, the day Milton is expected to make landfall. This may indicate that the parks could close if the hurricane’s impact worsens.

Hurricane Milton is forecasted to hit the Florida coast as a Category 3 storm, and a state of emergency has already been declared by Governor Ron DeSantis for multiple counties, including the area surrounding Disney World.

As a precaution, Disney has also blocked new hotel bookings for October 9 and 10. While this move helps to reduce crowding during a weather event, it also ensures that Disney has adequate space for guests who might need to extend their stay due to delayed travel.

Disney’s decision to waive cancellation and change fees is part of a broader plan to manage guest safety and expectations during this unpredictable time. In past hurricane events, Disney has taken similar steps, ensuring that guests can reschedule or cancel trips without facing penalties.

Additionally, Disney has a proven track record of providing extra entertainment and activities for guests who remain at the resort during severe weather. The resort also deploys a “ride-out crew,” which is a team of cast members who stay on-site to manage resort operations during and after the storm.

With Hurricane Milton likely to make landfall mid-week, Disney World is taking every step necessary to ensure the safety and comfort of its guests.

While the parks remain open for now, further closures may be on the horizon as the situation develops. For those with upcoming vacations, Disney’s fee waiver provides the flexibility needed to make last-minute adjustments, whether that means rescheduling or canceling entirely. Guests are encouraged to stay informed by checking Disney’s official weather updates and keeping a close eye on any changes to park operations.
