New ‘James Bond’ Series Confirmed, Official Title Also Revealed

James Bond has a new mission on the horizon, and Grant Morrison intends to make it a memorable one. The acclaimed writer is teaming up with IDW for Sunbreaker, a new six-part adventure that promises to push the legendary British spy into unfamiliar territory.

Ian Fleming Publications announced the partnership with IDW, best known for publishing Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Ghostbusters, confirming that Morrison will take the reins of the new 007 series.

“I’ve been a James Bond fan for as long as I can remember and this opportunity to put my own stamp on a British character as iconic as King Arthur, Robin Hood or Sherlock Holmes, was too good to miss,” Morrison said. The writer is also known for acclaimed work on All-Star Superman and Batman.

However, Morrison's ambitions extend well beyond a conventional spy story. Describing Sunbreaker as an attempt to create a definitive Bond adventure, he promised unfamiliar adversaries, new gadgets, fresh cars, and a villain inspired by real-world headlines.

The writer also offered a vivid picture of the story's tone: Bond will move through a world of intrigue, violence, double-crosses, and deception “like a killer shark among minnows.” It's an ambitious pitch for a character whose adventures have spanned novels, movies, games, and other media for decades.

There is no release date for Sunbreaker yet, and it's unclear whether the series will share continuity with other recent and upcoming Bond projects. That includes IO Interactive's 007 First Light, which stars Patrick Gibson as a younger version of the spy, and Amazon MGM Studios' upcoming film reboot.

Denis Villeneuve (Dune) is directing the next Bond movie, with Steven Knight (Peaky Blinders) writing the screenplay. However, the next actor to play 007 has yet to be announced.

Clearly, the new comic series arrives during a particularly busy period for 007. Charlie Higson's Young Bond: SilverFin is receiving an audio drama adaptation in October, while the literary lineup includes James Bond and the Secret Agent Academy (2027).

Bond fans also have another archival release to anticipate: Titan Comics is preparing Ian Fleming's James Bond Signature Comic Strip Collection Vol. 1, collecting seven original newspaper adventures, for February 23, 2027.

With Sunbreaker, Morrison is preparing to put his own unmistakable stamp on one of fiction's most enduring spies.
