Walt Disney World Resort is preparing for a notable operational shift—and it’s coming sooner than many guests might expect.

Visitors currently have access to most of Disney World’s offerings, but one park has been noticeably missing from the lineup. Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park remains closed, with its return scheduled for May 12, 2026—just over a week away.
The temporary closure, which began back on February 14, aligns with Disney’s established rotation system between its two water parks. While Typhoon Lagoon has been offline, Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park reopened the same day following its own refurbishment period.
This rotating schedule has become standard practice in recent years, allowing Disney to perform routine upkeep without shutting down both water parks at once. While practical, it hasn’t been ideal for every guest—especially those who planned trips around Typhoon Lagoon’s unique setting.
The park’s immersive storm-themed environment, highlighted by the famous Miss Tilly shrimp boat perched atop Mount Mayday, has long been a favorite. Add in one of the largest wave pools in the world—known for producing six-foot swells—and it’s easy to see why some visitors have felt the absence.

According to Disney, the closure is strictly for maintenance purposes. Filed permits suggest work has focused on infrastructure and general upkeep, including water systems, attractions, and cosmetic improvements. Guests shouldn’t expect new rides or a major reimagining when the park reopens.
In the meantime, Blizzard Beach has served as the sole water park option at Walt Disney World. While it brings its own personality with a snow-themed concept and high-speed attractions like Summit Plummet, it offers a very different experience compared to Typhoon Lagoon.
There is some good news for guests planning summer visits. Once Typhoon Lagoon reopens on May 12, both water parks will operate together through the peak season. Disney is also introducing an added benefit for resort guests. Between May 26 and September 8, 2026, visitors staying at Disney Resort hotels will receive complimentary water park admission on their check-in day.

This dual water park operation echoes a move Disney made in 2025. “For the first time since 2019, Disney World will have all 6 of our parks—all 4 theme parks and 2 water parks—open at the same time,” Disney wrote in an official statement last April. “From May 21 through September 7, Disney World guests can enjoy the tropical shipwreck oasis of Typhoon Lagoon and the frosty fun of Blizzard Beach water park.”
That milestone marked the first time since the 2020 pandemic closures that all parks were running simultaneously. When Disney World initially reopened, operational adjustments meant only one water park was available at a time—a policy that remained in place for several years.
Now, Disney is bringing that full six-park lineup back once again, though likely for a limited window. Based on previous patterns, Blizzard Beach could close again in early September, returning the resort to five operating parks.

For now, guests planning trips should take note of the timing. Those visiting before May 12 will need to rely solely on Blizzard Beach, while arrivals afterward can enjoy both water parks during the busy summer months.
