The Disneyland Railroad, an iconic feature of Disneyland, recently halted its operations for refurbishment, which commenced on January 13. This closure marks another step in the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of the beloved train that has served as a whimsical transportation option for guests since Disneyland’s opening in 1955. Renowned for its historical significance and visual charm, the railroad efficiently transports visitors around the park, allowing them to enjoy the scenic routes without the fatigue of walking.

For several weeks, the train will be unavailable as the refurbishment team undertakes extensive updates. Last August, the train had previously closed to upgrade its tracks and introduce enhanced narration to the ride, which debuted in October 2024. For fans looking forward to returning to the railroad, they can be hopeful that this latest refurbishment will be completed just in time for the start of Disneyland’s 70th anniversary celebration on May 16.

The reasons behind the latest closure revolve around the need for further track replacements and improvements to the overall experience. As part of Disney’s commitment to maintaining high standards for attractions, the refurbishment will address essential aspects of the railway system. New enhancements are expected to include not only additional track improvements but also more updated narration that ties in with recent attractions, ensuring a seamless experience for guests.

Completion of the refurbishment is ideally timed to coincide with the kick-off of Disneyland’s 70th anniversary festivities, promising that the railroad will return with fresh updates for guests celebrating this landmark occasion.

Riding the Disneyland Railroad is more than just a transport option; it is an adventure in itself. Passengers enjoy an 18-minute journey that takes them on a delightful round trip through the park, with four distinct stops at Main Street, U.S.A., New Orleans Square, Mickey’s Toontown, and Tomorrowland. Along the way, riders are treated to stunning exhibits, including a miniature recreation of the Grand Canyon and fascinating Audio-Animatronics that bring prehistoric creatures to life in the Primeval World section of the ride.

The scenic views alongside the Rivers of America feature rugged landscapes inspired by four significant American rivers: the Mississippi, the Columbia, the Missouri, and the Rio Grande. Guests can bask in the picturesque scenes of wildlife and waterfalls while learning about the park’s history and the craftsmanship that goes into creating these immersive experiences.

The closure of the Disneyland Railroad occurs during a period of broader updates across Disney parks. While the railroad undergoes refurbishment, the operational impact on the park is being carefully monitored to limit disruptions. The train typically arrives at stations every five to ten minutes, providing consistent service for guests.

Adding to the excitement, other changes are taking place within the Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks. Disneyland’s Red Trolley Car is set to permanently close in early February as the park makes way for the new expansion of the Marvel-themed land, Avengers Campus. These enhancements reflect Disney’s ongoing commitment to evolving the guest experience through innovative attractions, memorable characters, and beloved transportation options.
