Pedro Pescal, Gina Carano, and Disney

Pedro Pascal was the original breakout star of The Mandalorian when it premiered on Disney+, which transformed him from a respected character actor and prominent Game of Thrones guest star into one of the most recognizable stars in the world. In the years since, Pedro Pascal has appeared in the DC Extended Universe, starred in HBO’s massive The Last of Us series, co-starred with Nicolas Cage in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022), and is currently scheduled to appear in the Ridley Scott film Gladiator II and make his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Reed Richards, AKA Mister Fantastic, in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. But he was not the only breakout star from the Star Wars series. Aside from the true center of the series (Grogu, of course), actor and former MMA fighter Gina Carano appeared as a guest star in the first two seasons of The Mandalorian as Cara Dune, an Alderaanian Rebel shocktrooper turned galactic mercenary turned New Republic law keeper. Carano was announced to star in her own spinoff series, titled Rangers of the New Republic, which would have launched her into a whole new stratosphere of visibility and, presumably, financial compensation.

In February 2021, Disney and Lucasfilm announced that Gina Carano would not appear in any future Star Wars projects and that Rangers of the New Republic had been canceled. According to the company, the actress’s “social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.” Carano was soon after dropped from her professional representation. Although Gina Carano was quickly cast in several projects from prominent conservative production studios, her abrupt dismissal from Star Wars was treated as a “cancelation” by the right-wing media, who claimed that she had been fired for speaking about her personal politics publicly. Subsequently, the former Star Wars guest star filed a lawsuit against Disney, claiming discrimination against her conservative politics and, furthermore, that she was dismissed due to her gender and that male co-stars did not receive the same treatment.

The suit asks for $75,000 in damages and for Cara Dune to be written back into Star Wars. Notably, it is being funded by South African billionaire and far-right activist Elon Musk, who, at one point, pledged to bankroll lawsuits from anyone who believed they had been fired from their employment for having conservative views. It is unclear whether he has funded suits by any non-celebrities.

Lucasfilm Comes to Court

In a new joint filing from Gina Carano’s lawyers and Disney, the former actress is demanding a list of prominent figures at Disney and Lucasfilm provide testimony for her at trial (per The Hollywood Reporter). The filing states “Carano intends to take at least 10 depositions, including Disney’s employees involved in the decision to terminate Carano…Carano expects that given the nature of the case, more than the allowed ten depositions will be necessary to gain a complete picture of what occurred in her case.”

The list of notable persons that Carano asks to testify includes Pedro Pascal, The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy, former Disney CEO Bob Chapek, former Lucasfilm Public Relations Head Lynne Hale, and, somewhat oddly, Bear Grylls. Apparently, Carano was set to appear in an episode of the Disney-produced Running Wild With Bear Grylls, which was pulled after the company parted ways with her and has since been reinstated. Pedro Pascal has not made many public statements regarding Gina Carano’s dismissal from the Star Wars universe. His former co-star has frequently cited him as a reason why various remarks taken as being anti-trans could not actually be the case since she had a professional working relationship with another actor who is publicly supportive of his trans sibling. In one interview, Carano said, “Me and Pedro [Pascal] reconnected after Carl Weathers passed away. There’s all these lies and all these weird stories that people make up in their heads. One thing I can say is I adore Pedro, and he said one thing to me. He said, ‘You and Carl were protectors.’” The trial between Carano and Disney is scheduled for September 25, 2025. When that date roles around, we’ll have to see whether Pedro Pascal will be forced to testify. The full text of the filing can be read here:
