Magic Ruined? Disney Shares Rare Backstage Footage of Peter Pan Performer

Disney has shared rare, behind-the-scenes footage that’s bound to surprise fans: a Disney character performer is seen in a way that defies the usual “magic” enforced at the theme parks. In a new video shared by Walt Disney Imagineering, viewers got an exclusive look at the Disney Cruise Line rehearsal studio in Toronto, where a performer rehearses for his role as Peter Pan.

The footage comes from a YouTube video featuring a behind-the-scenes tour of the Toronto facility, which includes 19 rehearsal studios used by Disney Cruise Line cast members. The footage shows entertainment cast members practicing choreography and vocals for onboard performances, such as “I’ve Got A Dream” from Tangled (2010) and “Prince Ali” from Aladdin (1992). Then, it shares a sneak peek at the puppetry designed for a Hercules (1997) show that will debut on Disney Destiny’s first sailing this November.

But the most interesting part? The video gives viewers a peek into the studio where Disney character performers train to portray the iconic Peter Pan.

We’re going to head down to our Peter Pan stunt room, and we’re going to see Peter Pan fly,” the host says.

What follows is a rare glimpse of Disney character performer named Max using flying rigs as he practices Peter Pan’s iconic poses and sings “I Can Fly.”

In the Disney parks and on Disney Cruise Line ships, character performers are traditionally instructed not to reveal who they portray. They often refer to their work as being “friends with” Peter Pan or Donald Duck. Sharing backstage footage is also strictly against their contract.

This official Walt Disney Imagineering video breaks with those traditions, offering a rare and intriguing look behind the curtain.
