Fans love to speculate—which ride is next? What’s getting reimagined? And which classic attraction is secretly on the chopping block?
While Pirates of the Caribbean has long been at the center of Disney fan debates, there’s a strong argument to be made that Haunted Mansion might actually be the one to keep an eye on.
Signs of Trouble at Haunted Mansion
The first red flag? Construction walls. Haunted Mansion’s queue has recently seen some areas blocked off, and although some of that is tied to the larger Rivers of America project, it’s not the only thing going on. Disney is also preparing for Halloween, which usually brings temporary updates. But that doesn’t explain all the changes.

There have been whispers—some say Disney is planning to tweak the preshow or add new effects to the ride. Others think a bigger refresh is coming, possibly inspired by recent Haunted Mansion media or even guest feedback.
And let’s face it: after more than 50 years of operation, Haunted Mansion is due for some love. Whether that means a full-blown refurbishment or just a series of strategic upgrades remains to be seen.
Pirates Seems Safe… For Now
By comparison, Pirates of the Caribbean appears to be cruising along without issue. No big closures. No rumors of an overhaul. No signs of anything major in the works.
But if you know Disney, you know that things can change fast.

Pirates has already gone through its fair share of edits in recent years, with updates to characters and scenes to reflect more modern values. And then there’s the elephant in the room: the Shanghai version. It’s a wildly immersive, tech-forward experience that makes the current version feel a little… dated.
Would Disney ever consider remodeling Orlando’s version to be more like that? Maybe not now—but the thought is absolutely on the table for the future, especially if the Pirates film series picks up steam again.
Haunted Mansion May Beat It to the Punch
The smart money is on Haunted Mansion being next to close, even temporarily. It’s already showing signs of early prep work, and it’s easier to quietly begin that kind of process during the slower parts of the season (or as a side effect of existing construction projects).

And while Pirates may face changes down the line, Haunted Mansion seems closer to its next chapter.
That’s not to say either attraction is going away forever. Both are fan favorites, and they anchor their respective lands. But as we’ve seen with Splash Mountain and other recent closures, nothing at Magic Kingdom is ever completely safe from Disney’s reimagining strategy.
Keep Your Eyes Peeled
If you’re heading to the parks soon, this might be a good time to hop in line for both rides—just in case. Because whether it’s ghosts or pirates, one of these legendary attractions could be in for some major updates.
And when Disney moves, it moves fast.
