Will Pirates of the Caribbean Location Reopen? Disney World Leaves Fans in Limbo

For decades, the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has captured imaginations with a voyage into the swashbuckling world of treasure, adventure, and eerily realistic audio-animatronics. From its debut as an innovative ride at Disneyland in 1967 to its evolution into a global phenomenon with a blockbuster film series, the franchise remains a staple of Disney’s storytelling magic. But as Disney plans new experiences tied to the pirate life, one notable location is facing uncertainty.

What’s Going On With Tortuga Tavern?

Located at Magic Kingdom, Tortuga Tavern has been a quick-service staple since 2011 when it replaced the former restaurant El Pirata Y El Perico. Nestled in Adventureland near the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, it’s largely inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean films, with references to the likes of Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp).

However, parkgoers have been unable to dine at the restaurant for some time. Tortuga Tavern last operated in June 2024, marking a prolonged closure that deviates from its usual seasonal schedule.

During the latter half of 2024, the space was temporarily repurposed as Tortuga Treasures, serving as a gift shop for the Pirates of the Caribbean ride while its permanent retail space, Plaza del Sol Caribe Bazaar, underwent refurbishment. Captain Jack Sparrow also made appearances at the location, further tying it to the beloved pirate theme.

Earlier this week, it seemed like the restaurant was suddenly gearing up to reopen. Walt Disney World Resort’s website listed January 1, 2025, as a reopening date for Tortuga Tavern – only for the day to come and go without anything actually happening.

Now, we finally have an update on Tortuga Tavern’s future. The Disney World website has been updated, listing the restaurant as closed through at least March 3, 2025, the furthest date visible on the Walt Disney World calendar.

The Future of Pirates of the Caribbean at Disney World

In addition to the uncertainty surrounding Tortuga Tavern, Disney has been expanding the Pirates of the Caribbean legacy within the parks. Walt Disney Imagineering has announced plans for a Pirates of the Caribbean-themed lounge in Adventureland, designed as a haven for all “pirate-kind.” Set to occupy the former Pirates League space, the lounge will extend the ride’s narrative, offering guests a place to toast to the pirate life in an immersive environment.

Despite these exciting developments, the fate of Tortuga Tavern remains unclear. Rumors of its permanent closure have circulated since 2024, and its indefinite status only adds to speculation. With limited quick-service options (or at least limited good quick-service options) at Magic Kingdom, many parkgoers hope for the restaurant’s return, though Disney has yet to confirm its plans.

As Disney continues to reimagine its parks, fans are left to wonder whether Tortuga Tavern ever will reopen or if its doors have closed forever. In the ever-changing landscape of Magic Kingdom, this pirate hideaway’s future remains a mystery.
