President Takes to Cinderella Castle Stage at Disney World, Addresses Guests After 55 Years of Magic

Magic Kingdom is officially 55 years old today, and Walt Disney World marked the occasion with a morning ceremony at Cinderella Castle and a fresh line of commemorative merchandise.

The park opened on October 1, 1971, becoming the first theme park at what would grow into Walt Disney World Resort. The celebration lands while the park is in the middle of one of the biggest construction efforts it has ever seen.

Joe Schott, President of Walt Disney World, took to the Cinderella Castle stage at 8:50 a.m. on October 1, 2026. The address honored the memories guests have made over the past 55 years, while also making remarks on the original hotel resorts that also opened with Magic Kingdom on October 1, 1971.

That start time fell just before Magic Kingdom's usual morning opening, so the guests most likely to catch it were those already on Main Street, U.S.A., during Early Theme Park Entry. Anyone hoping for an unobstructed view of the stage would have needed to get through security and the turnstiles well in advance.

Disney has frequently called its cast members the heart of the guest experience, and spotlighting two who were there in 1971 ties the 55th anniversary merchandise collection directly to the park's origins. Commemorative items connected to milestone dates have a track record of selling out quickly, so collectors should shop early.

From Opening Day to Today

Walt Disney died in 1966, before the Florida Project was finished. His brother, Roy O. Disney, guided the project through to completion and formally dedicated the Magic Kingdom later in October 1971.

Several opening-season attractions remain in operation, including Haunted Mansion, Jungle Cruise, “it's a small world,” and The Hall of Presidents. Over the years, the park has added major headliners such as Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, and TRON Lightcycle / Run.

The last big milestone was the 50th anniversary, “The World's Most Magical Celebration,” which kicked off on October 1, 2021, and ran for 18 months. It brought EARidescent décor to Cinderella Castle, new nighttime spectaculars, and a large merchandise lineup. This year's festivities are smaller in scale.

In July 2025, Disney permanently closed the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat to make way for Piston Peak National Park, a Cars-themed land with a rugged national park setting rather than the desert look of Cars Land at Disneyland Resort.

Much of the former waterway now sits behind construction walls, and walkways around Frontierland and Liberty Square have been adjusted. The Rivers of America was an opening-day feature, which makes the 55th the first major anniversary the park has celebrated without it.

Disney has also outlined Villains Land, a new area dedicated to Disney's most famous antagonists, planned for the expansion space beyond Frontierland. It will be the first land of its kind at a Disney park.

Those projects follow a string of completed Frontierland updates. Tiana's Bayou Adventure replaced Splash Mountain in 2024, Country Bear Jamboree became Country Bear Musical Jamboree that same year, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad reopened this year after a lengthy refurbishment.

Thomas Hitchen

When he’s not thinking about the Magic Kingdom, Thomas is usually reading a book, becoming desperately obsessed with fictional characters, or baking something delicious (his favorite is chocolate cake -- to bake and to eat). He's a dreamer and grew up on Mulan saving the world, Jim Hawkins soaring through the stars, and Padmé Amidala fighting a Nexu. At the Parks, he loves to ride Everest, stroll down Main Street with an overstuffed pin lanyard around his neck, and eat as many Mickey-shaped ice creams as possible. His favorite character is Han Solo (yes, he did shoot first), and his favorite TV show is Buffy the Vampire Slayer except when it's One Tree Hill. He loves sandy beach walks, forest hikes, and foodie days out in the Big City. Thomas lives in England, UK, with his fiancée, baby, and their dog, a Border Collie called Luna.
