If you've walked past the Jurassic Park section of Universal's Islands of Adventure this year, you've probably noticed that one of its signature rides has been missing in action. Jurassic Park River Adventure shut down in January 2026, and since then, fans have been left to wonder what exactly Universal has been up to behind the scenes. A set of new aerial updates is finally giving some answers.

Aerial photographer bioreconstruct posted three updates on X, covering rebuilt walls, restored dinosaurs, and the removal of scaffolding. Here's a look at each one, plus the reopening date and a few thoughts on how to plan around it.
Refurbishments this long can feel like a black box, so any glimpse of progress is welcome. These photos don't answer every question, but they paint a much clearer picture than we had even a few weeks ago.
Update One: The Paddock Walls Are Back

The first post zooms in on the paddock, one of the ride's key scenes. It shows the newly rebuilt walls from above, with a Parasaurolophus visible in the first photo.

Update Two: Giants Return to Their Posts

Next up are two of the ride's larger dinosaurs, shown in the middle of the refurbishment process.

Update Three: The Scaffolding Is Coming Down
The latest update is an aerial video, and it might be the most encouraging of the bunch.

Still wondering what's happening behind the walls of this closed Islands of Adventure favorite? These photos help.
Seeing most of the scaffolding removed from the paddock walls signals a project nearing the finish line. It isn't an official countdown, but it's a hopeful sign for anyone waiting to ride again.
Why a Ride Like This Takes So Long
The length of the closure makes more sense when you consider the ride's age. Jurassic Park River Adventure opened in 1999, and its technology, including audio-animatronics, needs steady maintenance to stay safe and working. Water rides tend to wear down faster than dry ones, and some sections here are outdoors, which only adds to the strain.
In short, a long closure is not unusual for a ride that has been soaking riders for more than two decades.
Settling the Jurassic World Debate
One of the biggest questions has been whether Universal planned to give the ride a new look. Early speculation suggested a Jurassic World (2015) theme, similar to what Universal Studios Hollywood did in 2019 when it turned its version into Jurassic World: The Ride.
Universal Orlando hasn't commented on those rumors. Meanwhile, aerial photos from throughout the summer appear to show the resort refurbishing the existing Jurassic Park (1993) theming instead of replacing it. That's a read of the photos, not an official announcement, but it leans toward a classic refresh.
Circle the Date: November 20, 2026
Jurassic Park River Adventure is scheduled to reopen on November 20, 2026. That puts its return right before the busy holiday stretch, which is great news if you're visiting Orlando in late November or December.
Many travelers pair Universal Orlando with Walt Disney World on one trip. If that's you, a November 20 reopening gives you a real shot at including the ride on a holiday visit, but double check the date as your trip approaches since refurbishment schedules can change. If you're visiting earlier, plan to fill that time with other Islands of Adventure favorites.
Remember it's a water ride. Bring a poncho or a spare outfit, especially on a cooler day, and if you're heading to a Disney park afterward, pack dry clothes so you don't spend the evening damp. Lockers can also keep your phone and wallet safe from a surprise splash. If you're visiting in cooler weather, riding earlier in the day when the sun is still warm can make the post-ride drying off a lot more comfortable.
