Hayden Christensen spent years away from Star Wars, but his comeback has turned into much more than a one-time return.
He has already stepped back into the roles of Darth Vader / Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen), and another appearance is coming in 2027. Now, an unconfirmed report claims Lucasfilm could have an even larger project in mind — one that would put Vader at the center of his own theatrical movie.
It would be a major first for a character who has been part of Star Wars since 1977.
Before fans get too excited, however, there are serious questions surrounding the claim. Neither Lucasfilm nor Disney has announced such a movie, and the rumor doesn't come from a major Hollywood trade. For the moment, it offers an intriguing possibility rather than confirmation of Vader's next chapter.
The Vader Movie Claim Remains Only a Rumor
The latest chatter centers on Christensen's future with Disney and Lucasfilm.
According to the reports, the actor could be approaching a multi-project agreement that would extend his Star Wars run. One of those potential projects would reportedly be a standalone Darth Vader movie.
The claim initially appeared on a Star Wars fan page on Facebook and eventually spread elsewhere online. Star Wars Theory, a YouTube channel with more than 3 million subscribers, later discussed it.
There hasn't been official confirmation since then.
Lucasfilm hasn't revealed plans for a Vader movie, Disney hasn't announced a new agreement with Christensen, and the actor hasn't said he has signed such a deal. But many outlets are running with the idea and putting the pieces of the puzzle together.
Those details make the rumor worth approaching cautiously, even as fans discuss what such a movie could look like.
A Solo Movie Could Revisit Vader's Darkest Period
The rumored setting would place the story in the years between Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005) and Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977).
That timeframe could allow a movie to focus on a very different Anakin from the one audiences followed through the prequel trilogy.
By the end of Revenge of the Sith (2005), Anakin has turned to the dark side and suffered catastrophic injuries on Mustafar. His life afterward forces him into the armor that becomes synonymous with Darth Vader.
A movie could follow the early stages of that transformation rather than jumping directly to the powerful Imperial figure audiences know from A New Hope (1977).
It could explore Vader adjusting to his physical condition, carrying out the orders of Emperor Palpatine / Darth Sidious (Ian McDiarmid), and hunting Jedi who escaped Order 66.
Star Wars has already explored parts of this period in other stories. A feature film, however, could tell that story directly through Christensen's Vader.
Christensen Has Been Open About Wanting More
The possibility isn't completely disconnected from Christensen's own interests.
His long-awaited Star Wars return happened in Obi-Wan Kenobi in 2022, where he once again portrayed Anakin and Vader.
While promoting that project, Christensen spoke about the character's future. During a 2022 interview with ET Canada, he said there was more of Vader to explore and expressed interest in a potential spinoff.
He won't have to wait for a hypothetical Vader movie to return to Star Wars again.
Christensen is confirmed to appear as Anakin in Season 2 of Ahsoka, which is expected to premiere on Disney+ on January 20, 2027.
There are additional rumors surrounding what could follow. Insider Daniel Richtman has claimed Christensen may appear in at least two more Star Wars projects beyond Ahsoka Season 2.
Lucasfilm hasn't announced those projects, making the uncertain part of Christensen's reported future as well.
A Major Star Wars Anniversary Is Coming
The timing adds another layer to the conversation.
Star Wars reaches its 50th anniversary in 2027, marking five decades since the original movie arrived in theaters.
Lucasfilm already has several major events scheduled.
A New Hope (1977) will return to theaters in February, while Star Wars: Starfighter (2027) is scheduled to arrive on May 28.
Between those releases, Star Wars Celebration will take place in Los Angeles from April 1 through April 4.
Christensen will attend alongside Ian McDiarmid and Anthony Daniels. There is no confirmation that Lucasfilm plans to announce a Vader project at Celebration, but Christensen's presence will likely keep questions about his Star Wars future alive.
Vader's Story Still Has Room to Grow
A Vader movie wouldn't necessarily need to revolve entirely around hunting Jedi.
The years after Revenge of the Sith (2005) could offer opportunities to examine Vader's anger, regret, physical struggles, and relationship with Palpatine. Those elements could help bridge the gap between the devastated Anakin on Mustafar and the feared Vader of A New Hope (1977).
Whether Lucasfilm actually wants to tell that story on the big screen remains another question.
There is currently no officially announced Darth Vader movie, director, production schedule, release date, or plot. The entire project remains an unconfirmed rumor.
What isn't a rumor is Christensen's continued involvement with Star Wars and his willingness to explore Vader further.
As Star Wars prepares to celebrate 50 years, fans will now be watching to see whether Christensen's confirmed return in 2027 leads to something much bigger for Darth Vader.
