Rob Reiner: From “Meathead” to Mastermind Director

Reiner’s entertainment career spanned more than five decades, beginning with his breakout role as Michael “Meathead” Stivic on Norman Lear’s revolutionary sitcom All in the Family. Playing the liberal son-in-law to Carroll O’Connor’s famously conservative Archie Bunker, Reiner earned two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy during the show’s celebrated run from 1971 to 1978.

Behind the camera, Reiner proved equally talented, directing an impressive string of hits across multiple genres. His directorial portfolio includes the mockumentary masterpiece This Is Spinal Tap (1984), the coming-of-age drama Stand By Me (1986), the fantasy adventure The Princess Bride (1987), the romantic comedy When Harry Met Sally… (1989), the psychological thriller Misery (1990), and the courtroom drama A Few Good Men (1992).

The Princess Bride is now part of The Walt Disney Company‘s catalog following the acquisition of 20th Century Fox. It’s now available on Disney+.

Rob Reiner’s relationship with Michele Singer began during the production of When Harry Met Sally… The romance that blossomed on set reportedly influenced Reiner’s decision to alter the film’s ending, choosing to unite the title characters rather than leave them apart. The couple married in 1989 and shared three children, including Nick Reiner.

In 2015, father and son collaborated professionally when Rob directed Being Charlie, a film co-written by Nick, drawing on his personal struggles with addiction and homelessness.

A family representative issued a statement to Variety following the tragedy:

“It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”
